Tournament

Postby k0jak » Tue Apr 11, 2006 3:02 am

Ive been thinking about this for a while i briefly discussed it with morfar and tchr on sunday night, and tonight i talked to green marine about it.

If anyone is interested we were thinking of doing a tournament, size dependent upon how many people sign up.

<GreEn`mArine> only accounts that are valid (same name, email as in ladder, and given valid ID) will be allowed to play

we also said that there would be a deadline period of perhaps 7-14 days for signups so people get a chance to signup.

The tournament would be DOUBLE-ELIMINATION brackets, for you who dont know what this means, if you get beaten on your first game, you'll go into the losers bracket, where you have another chance and will face the loser from a previous game, you can work your way all the way to the losers final if you win all of your next matches, however if you lose again then you are completely knocked out, then the winner of the losers final will play the winner's bracket final in the grande finale.

The tournament would use SET maps for each round, we discussed it as this.

for example

Round 1 (first bracket in winner's bracket) dm03. dm05 : Decider map: extra2

for the next round, e.g Round2 (bracket 2 of winner's and loser bracket).
would be like this

extra2, dm07 Decider: dm09

the deciding map of the round before will be the new starting map of the next round, so the round after round 2 which would be round 3, would use dm09 as the starting map,

for example

dm09, extra1, Decider: dm01

dm01 would be then used in Round4 for the starting map.

so each time a new round comes along the deciding map of the last round is taken off and starts the new map list for the next round.

The maps will be set for each round, thus making the tournament more interesting (and hopefully a few upsets for knocking players out :) )

It also means players cant demolish you on there homemaps, and we can see who really is well rounder.

Another thing is this, you may be wondering why there is a decider map.

A bracket win, will be a win when an opponent wins BOTH of the maps, if it is 1:1 in maps (frags will not be used to determine who wins, unless if after the 3rd map it was a draw).

So if it is 1:1 in maps, then the decider will be played, in the unfortunate event a map is a draw, the winner be decided on overall frags from the 3 games, this is a bit annoying but since there isnt an overtime feature in nexuiz yet is the only way around it.

This might not make complete sense cause its coming on 4am and i writing this quite rapidly.

Please add your comments/Ideas, this is what we want you to do, so we can adjust things,

Comment on anything you like, but map roster/system, limiting of players able to play or such, please post your views on. And also if you are interested.

First of all: we will need a script for this, a already at least half-way finished script. I am not interested (and don't have time) to create a whole new script for this.

In the old forums there was a discussion about starting the ladder (the one which is already running now) and a couple of people were posting in that Thread, and someone also provided an URL to a page that had several ladder/tournament scripts provided. I tried to manually find this page on google, but failed. All ladder/tournament scripts I found were not free.

However: is there a kind of archive of the old forums ? online or locally on one's machine ? if so, please provide me the link (or search in it locally for "ladder", there should be a URL to a (iirc german) php page with almost 15 free ladder/tournament scripts).

Back to the general thing:
The Tournament should be a seperated script, not "connected" (by database) to the ladder. However, when signing up you will have to be a member of the ladder, which means that you
- provide your userID of the ladder
- use the same username as in the ladder when signing up
- use the same email like in the laddder too
- you already must have played at least 2 matches in the ladder

This is needed to make sure that no geeks will sign up who don't give a shit whether they show up at the matches or not

Of course this means that all signups have to be separated and controlled by an admin, but this shouldn't be a problem because there won't be too many signups anyway, I guess.

We might, however, run into problems with the number of players. If there are e.g. 17 valid signups you cannot run a 16player competition anymore but you would have to switch to a 32 player tournament which is crazy because there would be many "default win" rounds (rounds where you don't have an enemy and simply bypass the round)

I suggest to say:
- If the number of signed up players is: 12 < number < 24, use a 16 player tournament. this means that max. 8 players might have to be dropped (this would be the ones who signed up at the latest time)
- if the number is: 24 <= number < 48, a 32 player tournament will be started

I just tried to find an average value between the 16 and 32 player border which would be 24, ifthe number is below 24, keep it a 16 player tournament, if it's bigger (or exactly 24) than 24, have a 32 player tournament with possible default win rounds

I would like to clear the situation a bit how the Double Elimination works, because me and morfar don't get a conclusion of it

I tested the script morfar showed me the link of and IMO it's doing wrong when showing the tourney table

Imagine you're at the Last WB and LB round, I call it "WB Final" and "LB Final"

In my opinion, after these two rounds are played, the "consolation final" will be played first. The participants are the LOOSER of the WB Final and the WINNER of the LB Final. The loser of this consolation final get's the third place of the tournament. The winner of this consolation final get's into the "Grand Final" in which he will have to fight the WINNER of the WB Final. The winenr of the Grand Final is #1, the loser is #2.

However, the tourney script things that the Grand final is between the WINNER of the WB Final and the WINNER of the LB Final, which is not correct in my opinion...

Is this right what I'm saying ?

aye it sort of is, but the #3rd place is the loser of the 'winners' final' vs the loser of the LOSERS final, since the loser of the losers final WOULDNT be placed in the top 3 anyway, so it is correct, you would jusy have to creatr a 3rd person playoff seperately(wont be hard, just One match, with 2 players :) ).

No since, the WINNER of the LOSERS FINAL BRACKET (2 players, against each other, REMEMBER, the winners bracket only HAS ONE FINALIST, the 2 losers highest up in the LOSERS bracket are the players of this game....THE LOSER OF THIS IS KNOCKED OUT...since they LOST AGAIN (oncewhen they got knocked down from winners bracket before, and also now in the LOSERS final...there is no 3rd place (UNLESS YOU WANT THE LOSER OF THE GRANDE FINALE TO PLAY THE LOSER OF THE LOSERS BRACKET...but shouldjt be....the loser of the losers final should AUTO be placed 3rd...leaving the GRANDE FINALE between the 2 PLayers who HAVENT BEEN knockend out more then twice.

okay, yeah, I got it. the mistake I did in my explanation was that I assumed and extra consolation final which isn't really correct, as it would give the one who lost the WB Final and then the LB Final still another chance which can't be true

your explanation is correct.

here is a screenshot of the out that the script creates:
Image

The "Round 2" of the WB is the "WB Final". "admin" wins vs. "albino". this means that now the two participants are set for the "Round 2" of the LB, the "LB Final" or "Consolation Final". the LOSER of this final is out and placed #3rd. The winner of this gets to the Grand Final and plays vs. the Winner of the WB Final, "admin"
