Herforst CTF

Postby torus » Tue Jan 23, 2007 2:54 am

Herforst CTF seems to be one of the most popular servers, and I probably play it the most often. I was wondering how other people play on Facing particularly. This is usually my strategy

If I spawn at the front or side of the building, I have a good chance of quickly getting to the other base (first), and since its just starting, I can safely grapple directly across, which is the fastest way, and snag that health pickup, and possibly the armor as well.

At the beginning, I aim for "porch," so I can pick up the nex, and then enter from the side, to confuse any early campers. If there are any rocket whores guarding the flag, i quickly determine whether or not I can pick them off from across the room. If not, I grapple to the flag, and then laser assist grapple to either the left wall, if ther is time (so i can pick up the mini health on the way out the middle exit hole, or if the rockets are flying I grapple to the balcony area.

If people are putting up a chase, a neato strategy is to run thru the tele to the top, (where they follow), and then quickly about face and head out, leaving my oppressor wondering where I went.

There are three ways it seems to traverse facing. underneath, which is always hazardous, especially with my packet loss, over the top, which is vulnerable to snipers, and my favorite, to swing over using the asteroids on the sides. this method is nearly unstoppable, unless the opposing team has a very lucky shot or a very good sniper.

Also, if the base is heavily guarded, I use the most effective entrance, which is the middle tele above the door. I gather up a rocket, grapple to this, and stop before I go through the 'porter. If one aims up to the low ceiling of this small area, and grapples, you will be transported not tto the floor, but to the ledge where the strength p-up is. from here, I take out any threats with my boosted launcher, and then grapple to the flag.

Of course, the easiest way to get big points is to capture the flag, so this what I aim for, instead of camping/ guarding or sniping (although im a decent sniper, im not as good as many others.)

Does anyone do anything different?

Btw, I know many hate herforst cause of the grapple, i think that the grapple adds alot to the gameplay, especially since the map seems to be optimized for it (with the asteroids on the sides). :P

I *still* am not used to the elastic grapple.

Going underneath never works for me. After a few seconds it automatically kills me and says something about being a monkey.

I usually just try to bunnyhop/strafehop/whatever into the enemy base, grab the flag, hop into the teleporter that leads to the top, laserjump off of there, and bounce on home.

Although, it does leave me vulernable to low ping super snipers. If there aren't any, it works well enough most of the time.

If there are some, I'm borked no matter what I do, so I just defend my base instead.

Well i am one of those that think the grapple destroys facing worlds. I think it makes defending much harder, too hard as the 'waves' of attackers come much closer after each other and most of the time people are unstoppable once they leave the base. I consider myself an 'ok' sniper but aiming in half a second at a fast moving target (before s/he is over that hill) is almost impossible. But if there are two good defenders in the base it can be really fun to waste attacker after attacker but alone there is no chance.

Well for my general tactics you can take a look at this thread: http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=849

Esteel- you seems to focus alot on defending, but when I play CTF, I almost always go for the offense, because it is more exiting in my opinion. For example, (with grapple) a person can fly into the base, get the flag, and exit in roughly three or less seconds, while when defending you are just hanging there with your launcher.

Also, when I get to the other base, I try to collect, if there is time, all the health and p-ups i can, so that the other team cant get them, but never bother with getting weapons from my own base, except for maybe a rocket or electro.

Let's just clear out things once and for all:

Facind Worlds for Nexuiz was NOT MEANT to be played with grapple. Ever.
the way you play that map is (and has to say, not by your fault, but that's the truth) is cheating. There are two major instant kill grids on the map, on above and one below, just to prevent this behavior (swinging around everywhere, , gaining insane speed and too fast captures).
I say try to play that map on a normal CTF server too, and decide, what's more fun.

Well its not really that i focus on defending but it seems to be the most needed function when playing online. Only very few people seem to care about defending and though this might seem arrogant i also think only a few people do it right ;).
But for being exciting.. defending can be very very exciting if someone helps with it. Stopping attackers, grabbing all the armor and weapons. Trying to be calm to have steady aim.. Especially with the hook the defense has to be good. As we both agree once people are out of the base its almost impossible to stop them.
I'm not calling the hook cheating but i think non of the current maps were designed with the hook in mind. For example take baconandeggs. I really have no idea how people can think its fun to grapple around that map. Its just 'the best monkey wins' but not ctf to me. But that is personal preference. I rather have big fights around the quad damage to be able to mow down the other team and grab their flag and protect the flag carrier then trying to be the fastest with the hook..
However maps like the new one C.Brutail is working on will work with the hook but NOT make it super fast.. it has lots of short but angled ways, the hook will HELP but not be the MAIN way to get the flag.. That is real hook-CTF to me.

Torus, you can see an alpha playtest release in Nexuiz general discussion, the map name is cb_ctf4 or Fortress Resurrection.

I wish herforst would take some of the maps that are used on the RBI CTF server and GET RID OF EGGS AND BACON....or, as some people call it, death in a box.
