A suggestion regarding CTF and the hook

There's obviously a divide between people who like CTF with the hook and people who think the hook cheapens CTF down to whoever knows where to hit, but I was thinking today about how it could be balanced in the same way the UT games balance CTF with the translocater: if you pick up the enemy flag and use the hook, you drop the flag. It seems like this could even it out a bit, allowing for the crazy acrobatics that the hook allows for without making CTF matches ridiculous. It'd probably have to be an svar so that admins who want unrestricted grappling can keep it.

I dont like it. Then noone would capture the flag, because the enemy could get to your base much faster than you could. IMO, the solution seems to be to add support for more weapons somehow, and one of those would be a grapple gun. that way you would either use grapple or a wep, not both. Support for additional weapons would have the added benefit of being able to have more weapons such as a superweapon? :roll:
Apparently tho, this is harder than it sounds.

I guess in some maps, especially close quarters, such a solution would work better than others, such as facing worlds.

People manage to capture the flag quite adequately despite this limitation in UT. This is what having a team is for. Maybe adding support for more weapons is a better long-term solution, but I don't think this is a bad idea; especially if it's an svar.

His point is one that I didn't take into consideration: The translocater is a separate weapon and not something that can be used with a usable gun at the same time. A grappling weapon is something that could be pretty useful, but the way it's looking it'll be 3.0 before we see something like that put in.

I'd imagine it's going to be a "when it's done" thing, or at least a "when we get on a roll adding enough features that it justifies a major version jump" like 2.0 ended up being.

well, eggs and bacon is nearly impossible to do without the grappling hook. Facing worlds can add some exelent strategies with a grapple, also. In my oppinion, it's kind of like spawn camping. It's a part of the game, deal with it. And if it really is an issue, why didn't the map designer prevent that kind of thing from happening?

Actually, I believe he did. You ever try to swing from the tops of the pyramids or under the holes on facing? Yup, you die. Even tho I dont mind, w/ grapple isnt the way facing is "meant" to be played.

Flag capping at egg and bacon is doable if you can laserjump, especially if you pick up health or armor.

I'd say get rid of the g_hoo_tarzen 1. That's stupid. Normal hook is much better imho.
Also, I don't like the idea dropping the flag while hooking.
The best solution: Server admins should enable hook only on those maps, that are hook friendly. Definately NOT "Facing Worlds" and "Egg and Beacon".
