Incredibly high jumps-I call it laserpadding

Postby AceOfThumbs » Mon Oct 29, 2007 8:33 pm

I've been experimenting with laser jumps and trying to go further, higher and faster. My latest experiment is laser jumping on a jumppad.

The timing and angle is tricky. You have to fire so the laser about half a second before you hit the jumppad.

When you get it right, you'll fly 2 to 3 times higher than usual. If it can be mastered, it would be very useful on some maps. Below are some examples. I got to the heights shown with the laser and a jumppad only. No other weapon, no hook, no special config, no weak gravity). I've marked the jumppad I used with a red arrow.

Image
Capture City - laserpad on the fire hydrant next to the base. Instead of jumping as high
as the short tower, you fly way above the base tower. Great position to rain down terror,
before stealing the flag.

Image
cbctf1 (I forget what the common name is for this map) - laserpad on the lower level.
Instead of jumping as high as the second level, you fly way above the base level. You
can get this high using the right launchpad from the central platform, but this could be
useful if you are going to your home base and the second level is overrun with enemies.

Mental Space - This map seems like it was made for laserpadding. It is so easy to get
picked off here that avoiding the standard flight paths and having more time and distance
in the air could be a huge advantage. I have 3 examples.

Image
Laserpad on the jumppad on the lower level. Instead of jumping as high as the second
level, you fly way above it. Blast the enemy and then go for the steal.

Image
Laserpad on the launchpad heading toward the center platform. Instead of landing on
the lower center platform, you fly above the upper center platform. Snipe the enemy.
They'll have a hard time reaching you.

Image
This is basically the same as the first mental space image. I laserpadded from the
jumppad on the other side. I liked the first image best to show the height. I included this
one because I thought it was a nice angle.

It is easier to do the same thing with a rocket instead of a laser blast, but you take heavier damage, of course.

other keywords so this post can be found in a search: jump pad, jumpad, laserjump

Mentalspace must be designed for laserpadding. You can laserpad from one base jumppad (the one going toward the middle and land on the floaty thing, then laser yourself onto the other flag. makes for some safe, quick caps.

You can also make it up to the top of the sniper tower on cap city with a single well-timed laser shot on the jump pad in the building nearby... a great way to surprise campers.

I figured some other people knew about this. I never heard a mention of it before, but I saw players on the upper middle island in Mental Space, so figured that's how they got there.

I just wish I could do it more reliably. I think it works about 25% of the time for me.

Yes it was, but not realy in the form its used now. It was made before the "new" high aitcontrol was introduced, as a quicky map for training movement and trickjumps. You dont need any laser/jpad combo to reach the center floater tho; just a well imes laserjump from the edge where the armour is. its hard to time tho, the mortar makes it less hard.
HOF:
<Diablo> the nex is a "game modification"
<Diablo> quake1 never had a weapon like that.
<Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along
<Samua>]Idea: Fix it? :D
<Samua>Lies, that only applies to other people.

And using the rocket launcher makes it even easier. :P

You been spec'ing me? :P
I don't know about that fire half-second before jumppad business...maybe with enough lag you'd have to for the server to "see" the laser fire at the right time. I just fire/jumppad at the same time, maybe fire 1/20th of a second (at most) before jumppad if the traffic's lagging...if it's responding any slower, it ain't playable anyway. I don't see how people on high pings can play at all.

BTW, if you jump high enough on any map, you'll assrun a UFO.

For us noobs, i find the easiest way to do it reliably is to walk onto the jumppad, firing right as my foot touches. This has a very high success rate for me. Not so for jumping onto it yet....still work to be done. :?

i use the Mortar.... ohhh.... i get it. <_<

if you "laser-pad" on the big jumppad on Soylent Space you can easily reach the roof.
