Putting [bot] in bot names

Postby Ed » Tue Jun 13, 2006 5:21 pm

I know a lot of people requested this but I think it ruins the point of bots. The idea is that they can mimic a human player and putting something in their name just gives it away.

It does not help to increase the number of players playing Nexuiz, it will decrease it. Picture this situation:

A new player is browsing for a server. They see a server with a nice low ping with 4 players on it and join. They then have hours of happy gaming without really realising that they are playing against bots.

If the server had [bot] in the name of all of the bots, the same new player would join the server, see they're all bots and leave. They might do the same on lots of servers, think no real people play the game and so go and play something else. That shouldn't be happening so [bot] in botnames should not be on by default.

Make it an svar as to what prefixes their name, if anything? That's how CS:S does it. You can put in bot or bob or idiot or nothing at all that way.

That feature will be in Nexuiz 2.0. But there are 2 cvars, bot_prefix & bot_suffix, so if you set both to an empty string, the bot will just have it's usual name.
However bot_prefix is set to "[BOT]" by default (it's disabled in campaign mode). I you think it ruins the illusion, just put [BOT] infront of your nick and you'll have another one :P
But bots are clearly distinguishable from humans by the way they play, so i don't see a problem there.

I only know 2 or 3 servers with bots.. and the name pre/suffix are customizable.. i think its even in the example server.cfg included with Nexuiz 2.0 so i do not see this as a problem.
:) Hmm irc and forum makes replys slow ;)

I'd thought of this. Probably won't convince too many people.

They are easy to distinguish once you've played the game. A first time player would not notice. Anyone who is at the stage of being able to tell will also probably know all of the available names for bots. If an experienced player can tell the difference between players and bots then there is no need for a [BOT] suffix.

I still stick to what i said earilier, its up to the admins of those 2 or 3 servers with bots to remove the prefix if they do not like it..

Did that "minplayers" functionality ever make it into 2.0?

Yes it did, but also the bots get kicked when no player is on the server by default. Thats to lower cpu usage. There is an option to make them stay if thats really needed though.
