2.5 - My impressions

Postby MisterMeister » Thu Apr 09, 2009 9:44 pm

Hi!

For those who don't know me, I've been playing Nexuiz for 2.5-3 years now (don't know exactly), and I really don't mean to be disrespectful by starting this thread. But in my opinion, as far as the FFA DM game mode is concerned, Nexuiz has become a whole new game. I wouldn't say it's a bad game, but it doesn't have much in common with the prior 2.x versions. The average match takes around four to five times as long thus making it both boring to play and to wait for the next match to start when you've just entered the server. Apart from that the game has become too newbie-friendly. I know what this sounds like ... but now that everything is so slow and all guns are almost equally weak Nexuiz ffa feels like one of those tekken-style beat'em'up games: No matter how skilled a player has become, an absolute beginner who simply presses as many buttons randomly as possible can easily be on par with him. -- As 2.5 is new to me, my last complaint might be wrong. But if it is: what's the point in changing speed and balance for ffa? If it is, it will not take longer than half a year until the experienced players have found out how to dominate again. No need for me to complain then? Not true, cause as I stated above: In half a year I'd be a good player of a whole new game, which still has the name "Nexuiz" but doesn't feel like it anymore.

BTW: I've already spoken to a few of the other experienced players and read some postings here, so I know that 1on1 and tdm gameplay seems to have improved. Even though I'm yet to try this out myself I appreciate that! But I've also heard of ctf players who complain in a similar manner as I did above. So, still not meaning to be disrespectful, I hope you will take into consideration what others and I have to say about ffa and ctf, maybe for a future release.

PS: Morfar, would you please update your nexuiz weapon sheet? This would really help getting used to the changes. Thanks.

Well, adapt and change. It is the way forward. Experience is still > noob firing blindly by a long long way.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

Hey. Thanks for sharing your experiance, but honestly, the guns have hardly changed at all! Iirc only the crylink and the rocketlauncher changed, both got nerved a bit because people found them too strong in 2.4. Ofc all the bullet guns have switched over to ballistic bullets (gravity curved) so you need to adjust and aim higher with distance. Oh and the electro got the detonation delay back. The blobs now do not detonate all at once with each one triggers an other explosion. Its rather fast so there is usually no difference in damage.
There are the new guns, but hey you can't complain that they chanaged :P
Maybe the most important point towards the guns is that antilag was fixed. In 2.4.2 it had a slight timing bug and thus worked badly, sometimes it did, sometimes not. Now it just works, which can make the nex, mg, shotgun and crifle feel really strong when you are aiming at the people (or for mg/rifle a bit higher to adjust for gravity).
So i really do not get your point that fights do take much longer because the guns HARDLY changed. Maybe its some new players that still need to adjust? But new players are always good and welcome by me.

Then for the physics. Its strange, some hardly feel a difference, some liked both and some notice the difference quite strongly which then results in either loving or hating the changed physics. Truth is that the ground friction got raised. So you stop faster when releasing all keys, and if you stand still you will accelerate much faster. That should improve dodging and make the game gain more speed in short time. You are right, that might help beginners as they can be a harder target, but people knowing and using laserjumps all the time have still almost the same advantage as in 2.4
In turn the air friction was raised too so that the top speed got slightly reduced and you loose a BIT more speed when doing tight turns (which on the other hand can be even tigher, you can do narrower circles). So the speed you get from a laserjump is basicly still the same. You just have to be more gentle when bending your flight path.
It takes a while to get used to but it hardly warrents the tamtam some people create about this change.

Maybe to prove my point: i recently played a match with OwnAge on my team and we two were playing midfielder (at least i think i did) and we did our best to stop Mirio on the other team from capturing. I think the two of use have quite some good aim and Mirio is good at moving around. Bottom line is that the rest of our team was not able to cap (i did not want to defend or attack... maybe that would have changed the outcome, guess OwnAge neither) but Mirio was able to cap several times bespite the two of us trying our best to stop him. If movement were really that bad that match should have ended differently. Maybe i'll see to upload the demo to make my point clearer. However i feel bad for just playing what i wanted to and not actually playing what would have helped my team :P

To be honest I haven't noticed a very large difference at all with the new physics, and the guns seem for the most part, the same. Infact I love the new changes, I think alot of this stuff that people are putting out about the physics and all this and that is just placebo. The point is, people always are going to complain about something (not that your points weren't valid MisterMeister). I mean you could make a 2.5.1 release and say, oh, the physics are back to normal, and secretly not change anything at all and no one would probably notice. I just think its stupid and people need to quit complaining and learn to adapt. Its the gaming way and the way it should be, this is the only way for Nexuiz to continue to move forward, and the devs understand that.

One of Nexuiz strong points is that it's constantly changing. Sometimes the changes are beneficial for you style of play, sometimes they are not. The pros will still be owning the noobs in 2.5, that much didn't change. As a whole, maybe the gap will be a little smaller, that will be a good thing to keep new players in the game. I support any change that will attract new players and keep them in the game on a long term basis.

I for one find it harder to make hits at the moment but I always need a long time to adjust. Even though I did play SVN version for months already, I rarely did it in competitive games because my favorite server was still a 2.4.2 server. At the frequency I am playing it will probably take months to get back to winning FFA DM games against average/good players. But I'll just try to adjust my game, be patient, practice a lot and try to have some fun while I do it.
Now with new shiny avatar.
