Just played the single player campaign... My thoughts.

Postby madscientist327 » Wed Jun 10, 2009 11:20 pm

Hey everyone, I just played through the single player campaign and I must say, this is an impressive game. The gameplay reminds me a bit of UT, which I used to play long ago and can be quite fun. I did have a few issues though. The bots are great at DM but are ridiculously stupid at CTF. They would be consistently running into walls and endlessly jumping on the jump pads. It's like they didn't even care about the flag. Their stupidity was particularly frustrating in the eggandbacon map. They played the game like it was DM and didn't try to get the flag. The times they actually did capture the flag they would just jump up and down on the jump pad and not cap it. I wanted to kill the idiotic bot and take the flag myself.

I also had problems with race map. I had absolutely no problem beating all of the gametypes before this but with this map, try as I might, I could not get the required time. Can anybody help me with it? Can it be that I lack the knowledge of the more advanced movement? This is the only map I have gotten completely stuck at in the campaign and any help would be appreciated.

Anyways, sorry about the long post. And despite the criticisms Nexuiz is the most polished open source FPS I have encountered and the only one which has captured my attention. Great job and keep up the good work! I'll probably try playing online in the future.

Just wait for the next release, the CTF ai got completely rewritten.

Try keeping pressed the jump key while pressing forward, that will give you greater speeds. Also you can pick up the grenade launcher located a few steps behind the start and shoot the floor or walls so you can increase your speed. Have in mind that if you turn pressing only the strafing key you will move faster than pressing forward+strafe.
You can see here a fast run on that map. See this one for better examples of the bunnyhopping (keeping jump pressed) and turning techniques.

Good luck, and thanks for the feedback!

It looks like this is the missing piece of the puzzle. I was already jumping and using the weapons to increase my speed. Problem is, after watching the videos, I still can't understand fully how to bunny hop. It just doesn't seem natural to me. When I try to turn and press only the strafe key I seem to only jump in place. Could you give the sequence of the keys that I need to press? After watching the videos you guys posted several times I still can't get it. Also when I shoot at the ground to increase my speed, I go very high up in the air. In the videos they seem to hit the ground again very quickly. Am I shooting at the wrong angle? Sorry for being such a bunny hopping newb. :?

I'm not familiar with the FFA acronym. What does it stand for?

Those videos have the "show pressed keys" option enabled, check out the bottom right corner.

Oh, I was well aware of that. It's just that when I tried it myself I couldn't get it to work right. I thought it would make more sense written down. Anyways, I'll try again later.

Right turn on speed = right strafe + SLOW rotation of mouse to the right
Left turn on speed = left strafe + SLOW rotation of mouse to the left

easy with practice

Ah, of course. Obvious now that I think about it.

By the way thanks for all the help everyone. :) I still can't manage to finish the map in time though. Maybe someday in the far future...
