You don't need to strafe while bunnyhopping (unless you're cutting corners). This was made like this because bunnyhopping you wrote is more like QW or Q3 and therefore was thought as non intuitional while developing nexuiz.

Nexuiz bunnyhoping is explained in docs/basics. Please read. In current versions you could try just simply keep the space pressed.

Hey, thanks Alien. This explains why I had such problems with this! All I need to do is hold the jump button. By the way, I didn't realize there was such great documentation in the Nexuiz folder. Thanks for the pointer. :)

In old-school Nexuiz (versions before 2.5) you need to repress space on each consequent jump. The easiest for me was to repress on landing.
