I don't mind the other team camping, but my teammates always behave like turrets, and stay in unstrategic places.

The most important things I want people to learn from the CTF guide are that defending is very important, to pursue the enemy flag-carrier, never leave the flag unguarded, and defend and attack through varied vectors.

Those are the people that we need to help the most so they can improve. It might sound harsh but lets face it, people playing like this can improve vastly even when just following a few small tips. This thread has more then just a few small tips :)

That second one is good but I'm wondering if it's possible to have a big club that comes from the side of the PC screen and clobbers someone when they go to the winning side which already has more players. ;)

The real way:

Charge towards the opposing team's base, get their flag, run outta there as fast as possible without getting shot, then either:

1. Hide until your flag is returned.
2. Try to return your flag.

And finally, capture the flag.

(Don't worry about killing anyone).

Nexuiz CTF guide by *BENDER*

What are you on about?

I've played a lot of CTF, and I've noticed most ppl don't play the way I want them to. This is largely because the term "Capture the Flag" is altogether too vague. Being an infinitive it implies a team-oriented approach, "WE are going to capture the flag," whereas the reality is quite different.

Would you like to play a game?

Global Thermal Nuclear War.

So you choose and join a server - but hold up, hoss. You can't just join any team or even let autojoin decide. No, no, no. Look over the scoreboard, figure out which team has a ridiculous lead and is stocked with ringers, then join that team, brother! You are on your way! Unless of course you suck and I'm on the ringers team - then you should join the other team, capiche? The important thing to remember is that, once you've joined a team, even if the teams are stupidly unbalanced and auto-balance is not enabled, DO NOT change teams to even out the numbers or the skill level, because it resets your score. At the end of a match, after all the cock-blocking frustration, all you have is that score.

So which team am I on?

If you shoot at somebody and you hear the hit-sound, whatever color they aren't, that's your team. Or after the first time you get creamed, look at the scoreboard and it should clue you in. There's a rumor going around you can tell your team color by the color of your weapon - but I'm colorblind, what the hell do I know?

How should we handle weapon and power up distribution?

Look, you remember the eighties, right? That short but sweet era when greed was good, everything was expendable, and whoever dies with the most toys wins? Same difference. Just take it all. The ringers already know not to expect to find a single shred of ammo or shield in their own base - so it's really just a grab contest with the other lamers. Good luck!

Are you going to explain how to actually play?

Why? Are you really going to listen?

"Capture the Flag" can be summarized as follows:

1) THE SLICK FC on each team is going to capture the other team's flag, because he's slick enough to keep his speed up, grab every power-up he can, aim accurately, *and* think objectively about the enemies next move, provided he doesn't run into

2) THE DEATH MATCHER, whose sole purpose is to camp the living crap out of the enemy's base, specifically the flag area, not because it's a particularly good stategy, but because he'd rather be DM'ing but the DM servers are empty and he wants a high score without all the work of getting back to base alive with the enemy's flag, which is difficult considering the multitude of

3) FLAMING NEXERS, who generally cannot think ahead like the FC, cannot aim ahead like the DMer, but can hitscan provided they are pretty much stationary, until they run into

4) THE SPAMMING HORDE OF SPAMMINESS, who run all over the map, collecting weapons and ammo they will never use, charging in futile fury at the enemy's base, announcing their presence with a chiming barrage of electro alt-fire, only to get TK'd by a mortar alt-fire or dialed in by a scared but lucky nexer.

Other Points

Team Communication: Forget it. Oh, you can try, and sometimes the results are amusing, but don't expect it to help.

Chattier Than IRC
: It's true. At any given time half of each team are discussing the merits of comparative religion.

Playing Positions (Attacking|Defending|Roaming)
: Every once in a blue moon, under the influence of a certain amount of alcohol, some players will start acting like a team. Pass me the beer goggles, baby!
