Suggestions

Hello, I am a new player and would like a make a few suggestions about things I saw after a few games. First I have to say that this is a very good game with great potential and has a great future.

When I first installed the game and started playing, I thought I had input lag. Turns out it was not lag, but simply how the way the player moves. So I got used to it and have enjoyed the game very much since then. I dueled k0jak tonight and he showed me a few things of what is possible with those physics, it was great (thanks!).

However I couldn’t stop from thinking that movement in Nexuiz could be a lot more precise. The game is very newbie-friendly because of strenght of weapons, balance, armors, etc. The gameplay is very fast and it’s also very easy to bunnyhop and do tricks. But it could be much better I think. The fast gameplay kinds of contradicts itself by having slow response time to movements. This is of course only my opinion.

Here’s an explanation of what I mean: When you change direction, say you are strafing left and then quickly want to strafe right, it takes take too much time before the player actually starts moving the other way. He has to slowdown, change direction, then accelerate again. So it feels like you always have a weight following you around. I'm pretty sure this is what the guy that reviewed the game on boomtown.net was refering to when he said that the "controls feel somewhat unresponsive".

I played with a few settings and found one called sv_accelerate that is set to 5.5 by default (it sets acceleration time from when you are stopped to max speed when walking). By changing it to a higher number makes movement much more “tigh” and makes moving around a lot more comfortable. By changing it, it would accelerate the gameplay without actually having people run faster. It would make the game a lot more competitive because of everything involved in movement, ie: dodging, jumping, tricks, etc. and also make the game a lot more impressive to watch.

Anyway, just try it. Try sv_accelerate 12 and see what I mean. Only problem I can see is that the “tilt” or “bob” of the screen when changing strafe direction looks ridiculous (which can be disabled/changed anyway).

I can’t see why something like this couldn’t be accepted for competitive play such as duels or 2on2s.

Also, someone should make a mod that let people control game settings more easily without an admin. Like typing 1on1 console would change maxplayers to 2, or setting it to ffa or any other mode, changing timelimit, etc. simply by a voting system. Since there arent a lot of servers yet it would help. I wish I had any programming skills :(

I think air-control is fine like this btw.

Hmm I kinda forgot about other things I was going to mention. Anyway you’re probably tired of reading already =)

What do you guys think?

You are not the first one proposing a higher value of sv_accelerate - and I could live with both values.

This certainly will be considered for a later big Nexuiz release (that would be 3.0, not a possible other 2.x release) when we do rebalancing again.

Thanks for your opinion on this!

As for a "community administrated" server - such a voting system already is in place and can be used for time- and fraglimit by default. Adding more settings to it would be possible, but we would need a list of good candidates.

Maybe (this is however just a MAYBE) I will once run a server that allows anyone to change any setting (by vote) and see if people will abuse it. If they do, I would shut down that server again.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

:)

There is such a mod for qw servers and it's wonderful. Don't know about other games. On most servers, for example, typing 1on1 in console sets maxplayers to 2, removes powerups, changes timelimit. Of course, Quake is a 10 years old game and the same match settings are used by everyone. I do not know enough about Nexuiz yet, but I'm guessing competitive games are always played with the same rules (timelimit, powerups or not) depending on game type.

Here are my suggestions, pretty much stolen from other games  :

Commands to set maxplayers: 1on1, 2on2, 3on3, 4on4, ffa (maxplayers set by admin)

Powerups (on or off).

When there is no players connected, server should reset itselfs to its original settings chosen by admin (ie. ffa, maxplayers 8, some map) so newbies connecting to empty servers are not totally lost.

Have some kind of "Match" command to set server in competition mode with pre-match. When all players are ready, game starts without server having to restar (with a countdown or something)t. All player spots must be taken before game starts. In match-mode, people connecting to server cannot join mid-game, they have to stay spectator until game is finished. This means that maxplayers shouldnt incluce spectators (something I find is missing from Nexuiz, cant spectate duels on duel servers :( ) If somebody disconnects mid-game, spectator (either the same player coming back or somebody else) can set team and re/join the game. Give the ability to "break" the game in case something is wrong (a player left, settings are wrong, etc.)

This would help play more serious games. If you want Nexuiz to be played for a long time and become competitive, I think this kind of mod is necessary.

Forget about what I said about sv_accelerate. It makes movement respond faster, however you need to change other settings too, or else you can jump and bunnyhop at crazy speeds. Don't know where my head was when I tested it first.

A few thing:

I noticed a small "bug" (if we can call it that). Sometimes when in battle and using RL, I hit fire button right before getting killed and can hear my rocket firing. However, no rocket is fired, it's just the sound effect that is played. This is a bit frustrating because I disabled explosions to get more fps and I think (well, the first few times it happened anyway) that I actually hurt my opponent and when I respawn I think he is weak so I jump to his face to finish him off with shotgun. Obviously I get raped because he is not weak at all. I guess it could be fixed simply by removing the delay when firing rockets (THAT WOULD BE AWESOME :D :D :D). Unless I'm crazy and there is actually no delay and I'm imagining thing . Sorry about the whine :( Just thought I should mention it.

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I was wondering about sv_clmovement_minping. Is there any particular reason why it is set to 100 (unless server admin changed it)? It basicly means that if you ping 99ms you will feel 99ms lag in your movement, but if you ping 100ms you wont feel any, right? Playing with lagged movement seems wrong to me, there shouldnt be any lag no matter what you ping. I can play other games with any ping and not feel lag at all (not talking about when firing of course). I thought it was standard in fps games today.

Probably your rocket did fire, but exploded from the same shot as the one which killed you.

Well, I guess that's possible, but it happened more than once and when getting killed by different weapons. Or are you saying that you can destroy flying rockets by shooting them?

Yes, most of the weapons (if not all) can do that. I do it a lot with the nex :]

No, you shouldn't feel like an idiot, since i doubt ai is really able to nex rockets ;)
(rockets & grenades have no size, they are just a point, so they can only be destroyed by splash damage)
