Should the grapple block your current weapon from shooting or not?

Yes, I'm beside of blocking the weapons. Offhand grapple suxx!

I'm making this poll, becouse Ithe grapple is too eay to use in nexuiz, and thus, most of the time a player gains unfair advantages.
Nexuiz is using offhand grapple. Offhand means grapple is not another "weapon", you can use it whenever you want, you don't have to switch back-forth your grapple and your last used weapon). Onhand grapple much much better, as you need to think about the risk of using the grapple: you can't shoot back, your only weapon is your speed - if you're doing well. However, with offhnad grapple you're still bale to shoot, and move damn fast - simply anywhere you want.
As divVerent said, it's impossible currently to code onhand grapple, however, tZork said, it's possible to make the grapple block your current weapon.
The poll is simple: block weapons, or don't block weapons when grappling?

I'm rather neutral on the topic.. i understand the need to slow people down by either making them use the guns or be fast BUT i also like fast games.. Well given that the grapple does change ctf games way too much i'm more inclined to accept such a change.. Maybe it should be configurable.. So i'm for the boobies :P

I would have said we could use the empty laser secondary mode for an onhand grapple but i think the way the weapons are handled are not suited for such a thing.. But i have not really thought much about it maybe divVerent could tell if i'm right or not :)

Both things shouldn't be hard, at least when "cheating" - that is, letting laser secondary trigger the hook. That would just mean replacing a button by a normal field... but it would probably look a bit ugly.

but I don't think such a change should go into a minor release... well, maybe as a cvar option.

However, I think making the laser secondary an "on-hand grapple" might be a good idea, but it will annoy all those who use the "switch weapon back" feature...
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

I often use the swithc back feature, and I still think that the laser is a very good ool to go around the map, that's why I did not suggest to change that.
Oh, and to stay true the Nexuiz concept about making everything configurable, yes a cvar for this would be nice. But default on.

However theres a separate command for that now.

I think binding each of the weapons to a key of its own beats even this solution as its just as fast as 'lastweap/laser2' but more flexible. I never used lastweap, laser2 sometimes, so it would be rather easy for me (and logical in some way) to use the laser as grapple. Others however might have more of a problem with that as its hard to unlearn those things once you get used to them. Maybe an other poll would help to see how people think about it.

I like the idea.

It'd be cooler to see it as its own weapon than as a secondary, though, like UT's translocator.
