Trouble with a geforce fx 5500 256mb

Postby RENZ0 » Sat Feb 24, 2007 8:05 pm

I have been having problems with my geforce 5500. When Playing nexuiz I get poor fps on any map. I have tried lowering cvars, yet not much increases my fps. I was wondering if you had any advice. I have been having this problems with other opengl games as well. In one opengl game I could get as high as 303 fps in this one tunnel (on highest graphics), however in the same tunnel i only get 125 fps now (on lowest graphics). So in that game as soon as someone starts shooting at me my fps drops below 10. I've tried adjusting various options to try to improve my fps, overclocking, and updating drivers, but nothing rly helps. I even tried using a different harddrive with windows on it, and it lags just as much. This tells me that it hardware related. :/

Maybe you should know that your GF5500 is just like a decently overclocked Geforce FX5200. Sorry but you can't expect very good framerates with that one. If your computer is as old as the card, maybe there's another two things that slow you down like less than 512MB RAM and a not-too-powerful CPU.

I'd suggest you to use the presets file "low.cfg" by adding + exec low.cfg to the command line of your desktop link.

Or start the game, open the console and type exec low.cfg [enter] and then vid_restart [enter].

my computer is 5 years old, and wasn't rly good enough to run xp (even tho it came with a copy...). I am using r_showsurfaces 1 right now, and its rly fun playing like that, but the only problem is i can't tell teammates apart from enemies so it says "you moron! you just fragged a teammate" (or something like that) every 5 seconds... any ideas?

Also I know that the 5500 isn't a good graphics card anymore , but it was the best one i could find for a pci only motherboard (I don't buy ATI graphics cards anymore after one of mine fried after just one month of use... without overclocking it, and they woudn't replace it). Anyway I was just asking if anyone had any idea about why my graphics card would for no obvious reason start putting out lower fps. Unless of course its just because it is getting old, which would be a more obvious reason for the lower fps.

thanks for replying :)

Your teammates have a sign above their head, that should be noticeable even with r_showsurfaces:

Could you post your full system specifications (cpu, memory, os) then (when the other game worked well) and the specifications you have now now and also the modifications that occured during this time (like reinstalling the os or hardware issues / changes) ? I still think it's rather weird that it worked back then but not now.

Last night I was playing, and I noticed a little gray square above their head. I finally realized that this meant that they were on my team. However it does not look anything like the one in your pic.

I noticed that I was getting low fps about 6 months ago. I may have updated my graphics drivers around then. However around that time I do remember one my memory sticks failing, and replacing it with a new 512mb ddr2 stick. since last month I have been using another harddrive and have started over (I lost all my data, because my old got damaged... after i kicked the computer  )

Perhaps a stupid question... and I perhaps just missed this information in the previous posts... but you have installed the drivers from nvidia.com? The ones coming with Windows are complete and utter crap.

I guess the main problem is, that he has a PCI card. Without texture compression, the PCI bus might not be able to provide enough memory bandwidth.

Since you are using r_showsurfaces, you can set the texture quality to good or best, so you'll be able to recognize that bubble.

well I can tell you my motherboard is complete crap, but that doesn't answer my question though. Why am I getting lower fps then before? I have asked on many forums, and in IMs, but no one has a real answer.

Well, honestly, this is just not possible. Do you really think that's possible???? Nonono, there never has been any PCI card with 256MB RAM! I'm sure! Even Dell wouldn't dare to sell such a crap.

I rather think this Computer is completely missing its mainboard drivers, or something else really important is missing. Why don't I see any information about the chipset?
