8800 GTX = pentium D

Postby WH173Ru5Tty » Mon Jun 11, 2007 1:12 pm

I just reinstalled nexiuz, and I'm getting very poor performance on this rig:

Motherboard: nforce 680i
Processor:Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20GHz (2 CPUs) [long story]
Memory:1022MB RAM ddr2
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX

Operating System:
Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

I even turned everything down, and did r_showsurfaces 1, yet still the game lags out. Any thoughts?

Well, quite hard to say. In fact you should have a rather amazingly fine performance. I run nexuiz with a GF 8600GTS, and get up to 600fps, depending on the settings. I definately think that no special modifications in Nexuiz should be necessary.

You should try opening the Windows Task manager and disable one of the two CPU cores (go on tab "process", rightclick the nexuiz.exe and choose that point saying something like "allign" and remove one of the shown cores). Then look what happens. Well, since Version 2.3 I don't need to do that anymore with my C2D, so I can't give you any guarantee.

If you don't succeed that way, you should look for the settings in the Nvidia driver. Possibly you'll find some presets especially for Nexuiz there (like I did on the 93.71 driver for me old 7600GT).

Another thing: you don't seem to have enabled the fps display function. Do so by opening the console and typing < showfps 1 >.

Then please post your results here. And if you happen to find out which setting exactly causes the poor performance with the 8800GTX, tell us please. Unfortunately all of those who have one and suffered the same problems like you can't remember when exactly they were solved :P

I fixed the problem, short of. It turns out that I had set AA to 16xq and messed with the lod value, because I was testing it out with quake 3, and I had forgotten. I still don't get that great of a performance, out of nexiuz, though. sure I get like 500 fps with lighting effects off, but as soon as I turn anything up my fps goes down to 30, and video restart doesn't do shit. Like wtf were they think when they made this game? "Hey, lets port the old quake 1 engine, to make players scramble for good frames per second." "Sweet, lets do it." "Alright"

I mean really wtf. I've played games with better lighting effects on this rig, and my frame rate doesn't go down to freaking 30.

Also, disabling one of the cores with a pentium D is a bad idea. Its like changing a pentium piece of crap into a bunch of hot bullshit under your heatsink. I had turned one off in the bios, because I thought it would stop the dam thing from overheating. I had to buy some new thermal paste, because intel can't put two pentium 4's together. Now finally, the bullshit doesn't kill itself.

nVIDIA can't make drivers for shit. I installed the drivers from the company that made my 8800. It works fine, but nvidia had a newer version. More like a bigger piece of dog shit. In a game I normally get 400 fps, I was now getting 10-30 fps. fuk that shit. I went back to the bfg drivers. I rather set my computer on fire than install that shit.

Another thing: you don't seem to have enabled the fps display function. Do so by opening the console and typing < showfps 1 >.

What do you mean? It's on by default. I draw fps in every game that supports it :S

Then please post your results here. And if you happen to find out which setting exactly causes the poor performance with the 8800GTX, tell us please. Unfortunately all of those who have one and suffered the same problems like you can't remember when exactly they were solved Razz

Ya, I'll tell. Don't turn on any lighting effects. It will crap out your game. why do all the lighting effects have to be real time? That makes no sense. Some of these lights don't even get blocked out if your character stands in front of it. There is no point in wasting players frame rate like that. Is this game trying to get people to use SLI? some people aren't that freaking rich.

I have to agree, I really would like to see nvidia or ati to make open source drivers. I'm finding that I get much better performance on XP then I do under linux. I really don't like that too much...

somebody asked chris dibona or some other linux guy from google about the biggest needed thing for linux, and he said it was open source drivers.

I'm also hoping that the 8800's linux support improves, I'm looking into getting one.

I'll freak out on all the shitty devs I want to until I get banned from this forum. Really WHAT THE FVCK were they thinking? The game isn't even fun. I move so slow, I often find myself using the plasma gun (name?) to go faster. I don't want to do that sh1t 24/7. OMFG, did they even play this shitty game before they released it? It wouldn't even take that much to fix the movement. I'm going to make it clear, that you shouldn't spend a penny on this game. you shouldn't even spend the time to download the piece of crap, or the HD space it takes up. I mean omfg. look at cube 2. Sure, its a crappy game, but it has better gfx than nexuiz, and yet my frame rate is always 199 (fps cap). Now why didn't that make an engine that good? Prolly because they can't. cube 2 even has more people playing. wtf... rly wtf were they thinking, even for a free game. Its like taking a sh1t on quake 1. No one likes it afterwards, and it doesn't even look like quake 1 anymore.

I've done some research on the nVidia forums - It seems like poor performance on WinXP is a common issue, I've found a few solutions:

Using driver version 97.28, or 97.44.

Switching the resolution to the exact same as your moniter [In game and desktop].

Running a .WMV in Windows Media Player before gaming [don't ask].

My best hypothesis is that the 8800GTX doesn't support OpenGL [what Nexuiz uses], however in the past, someone has actually managed to play Nexuiz with the same card, just fine.

I'd recommend waiting this out for the time being, until the situation settles down [never buy the latest 'card, staying a generation behind is cheaper, and almost always more stable].

Have a nice live..
