Improving Server Ping - Suggestions?

Postby thedevnull » Mon May 05, 2008 5:42 pm

Just put up a Nexuiz 2.4 server on a 10/10Mbps connection and I am getting a crappy ping (112-9999ms) according to the in game interface and the master server lists. Have a Linksys WRT300N with the UDP 26000 port open and no ICMP filtering on.

Any suggestions on improving this?

What os is the server running on? For now i'll suppose linux..

Well first steps are too see if the ping really is that bad (try the program ping on you computer and see if its output is similar to what nexuiz tells) and to verify if the server does run well (try 'top' and find some processes taking too much cpu time) also run the 'status' command on the nexuiz server console and see if it reports dropped server frames or anything bad..

Hey Esteel,

Oh, its Debian. The server is showing up as 2 entries as well on with the low ping I specify below and one entry with 9999ms. Wha? I verified the Linksys configuration and also set up QOS to prioritize UDP 26000. Seems as though the ping is showing as 25-50ms internally. Externally on some of the masters its showing as 90-120ms.

I ping the master server I get :
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 33.926/34.535/34.908/0.368 ms

Top says there is little to no utilization:
top - 15:51:02 up 4:20, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
Tasks: 54 total, 1 running, 53 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.0%us, 0.0%sy, 0.0%ni,100.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 970160k total, 193700k used, 776460k free, 5544k buffers
Swap: 2908152k total, 0k used, 2908152k free, 98804k cached

Server Status says:

Timing 2.4% CPU, O.00% lost. offset avg 0.2ms, max 1.0ms, sdev 0.1ms

Do I need to add any port forwards for the communication with the master servers? Im gonna restart the server just in case.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

That sounds very strange. I know there are some router that mess up the NATing.. maybe this is one of them, that might explain why there are two of them.. No idea if thats fixable other then getting a better router though.

How does it work if you connect only the Debian system and not trough the router (if you can test) ? Also, what Linksys model is it? Maybe, if the router is the trouble, you could try one of the custom dd-wrt firmwares. :D

Btw (I know this may be an idiotic question but it's better to be a public idiot than a silent fool, so...), if you're running in the same LAN as the server isn't seeing the two (the low-ping and the higher-ping ones) normal? I think this happened to me as well (with no trouble included), but I'm not sure (I'll tell you after I try it out).

Hey Buster,

Its actually a version of the router that can't run DD-WRT and I am replacing it with IPCop, Untangle or Pfsense soon anyhow. I'm sick of crappy soho (toy) network hardware.
