[SOLVED] Free software drivers for playing Nexuiz?

Postby Aizawa » Sun Apr 12, 2009 12:06 pm

A thing: My Radeon 9100 runs fine on GNU/Linux with the free drivers and without lighting effects. The only graphics cards with free drivers are the Radeon 8500 series (R200), which is 8500-9250.

In the "recommended graphics cards" thread, "a thing" said that. As far as I understood it, he meant the free software (as in freedom) drivers, and not the (free as in beer) drivers.

Some of you might remember me from asking about how high you thought I could have my settings a few months ago or so. Well, now I've turnet into quite the free software nerd; but I would love to play nexuiz, even if this meant setting all graphic settings to minimum.

I usually have the "r_showsurfaces" option at 3, because I like the clean look, so I have the textures at the minimum quality; so that's one step..

Perhaps this is a stupid thing to ask, perhaps it's not possible, but if it is, how do I make it playable with the mesa drivers? I have a ATI HD 4850 card. (Should be noted that it even lags something awful in the menu of Nexuiz 2.5...)

Oh well, thanks to esteel's sticky in this subforum and a little fiddling by myself I have about 100fps in game, but for some reason the menu is still laggy, but it is manageable. I lowered all effects to minimum and set my screen resolution to the 600*xxx option, whatever it's dimensions are. I put esteel's low config in my config file (although that config is not absolutely minimum, I think, so I had to lower a few settings after that), and, well, now I can play. Might not exactly be the most beautiful Nexuiz I've ever seen, but wth. :)

This is a bit late, but I can play Nexuiz 2.5 on an old x800gto using the open drivers with a 1680x1050 res. and the "Medium" preset. Frames are in the 60-120 range. Setting the texture quality to high has little impact on overall performance as well.
By the way, there is no 3D for r6xx/r7xx chips yet on the open drivers. Can't wait until they do however.

FYI, r6xx/r7xx basic gl support is public now (obviously still in git)

I was referring available to end-users. Anyway, these are old, but not much has changed in terms of 3D performance for the open drivers:

Keep in mind that PTS uses a rather high quality preset for all its demo runs. With some tweaking you can get the game to playable levels.
