Kubuntu Linux (I use Karmic Koala Alpha 2). GNOME is too ugly for me. KDE kicks ass...

i will go with everyone here and say linux . Ubuntu is doing good with me, i tried gentoo for about 6 months and while it seemed to run a bit smoother (not by much, might be placebo) the pain in the ass that it was to update it and fix all those things that would break everytime made ubuntu 100x better.

from your specs, i guess its a macbook or mac mini that you have. I have myself a recent mac mini at home (gf's computer) with same 9400 gpu and im curious on how the ubuntu is doing on it in nexuiz. if you could share you experience with it (performance, ease of installing the proprietary drivers for gpu, etc..) it would make me very happy. I tried nexuiz on it with osX and omg, compared to my pc with ubuntu, it was really, REALLY shitty. i tried it with everything at minimum settings and 1680*1050 resolution it was laggy as hell and totally unplayable.

Im very curious on how it works on very similar hardware with ubuntu because i would like to switch to a macmini myself (mostly because of space and power saving capabilities) and nexuiz is pretty much what keeps me from doing it.

thanks

I just noticed that Linux (Ubuntu in particular) is gaining a ton of popularity. Just over a year ago I was using XP, but now my gaming rig is running Ubuntu. I think Windows is (for real this time) phasing out.

Surely you jest. This just means that they're not doing a good enough job of copying other OSes.

Anways, its a 24 in imac. Amazing display but video driver is horrible.

Ironically they did a better job writing a driver for the GMA 950 than intel themselves...God that's sad. lol

I'm SOO glad the latest patch added support for the scroll wheel on the mighty mouse but it still only is a single click mouse in that it only has 1 button. It senses which side based on touch/pressure. This makes the nex absolutely useless.

Honestly, I haven't gotten around to getting an install for it. My mom swears about it and how she hates it often and starts screaming at me whenever the batteries die in the stupid bluetooth keyboard. Strangely it identifies as my laptop's BT keyboard and not the imac's[?]. She claims its not hers and then gets defensive/protective. Was truly amusing that it took her a few weeks to notice the bootcamp drive on her desktop lol.

I have a 20 gig IDE laptop drive and a usb adapter. I'll make a couple gig partition and install ubuntu when I have a chance.

As for imac mini: graphics card is pretty good. Now it IS a decent computer. Thought they were still making them on par with their laptops. Just remember that with all apple products there's only 2 ways to upgrade: buy a new one, and completely gut the old one (IE buy a new one and put it in an old shell lol)

I play using Windows Vista, and the game runs fine.

As soon as I take the time to roll back my Ubuntu partition from 9.04 to 8.10, I'll probably use Ubuntu for gaming instead.

(ATI is too damn lazy to make graphics drivers for their legacy chips compatible with 9.04 atm.)
My will be done.

Rolling back to make something work? Why don't they keep multiple propreitary graphics driver versions for different hardware generations in their repositories like any sane distro would?

It's not necessarily ATi's fault in this. Any hardware manufacturer will cutoff support for older hardware even if they do have a unified driver architecture. nVIDIA no longer supports hardware older than Geforce 6 for example.

Phoronix have recently done a benchmark comparison between Ubuntu and Arch:

<Diablo> the nex is a "game modification"
<Diablo> quake1 never had a weapon like that.
<Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along
<Samua>]Idea: Fix it? :D

Well, it depends on 3 things: Drivers, desktop composition, and the amount of bullshit you want to deal with. :D

Drivers: If you're on an ATI graphics card, you will most likely get FAR more performance out of Nexuiz on Windows than on Linux. This is simply due to ATI graphics drivers being absolutely horrible for Linux. Also a note, some mice don't play well with Linux. On Linux with default mouse drivers in e.g. Ubuntu, it uses a low DPI (Not very smooth) by default, which makes gameplay pretty bad. The only way to fix this is to #1: Force the high DPI, or #2: Install mouse specific drivers. Both of those usually don't end well.. Especially for Logitech mice. Microsoft mice are fine with #2, and usually become smooth after this. On the Windows side of things, the mouse is very smooth as it uses a wide range of drivers suited for many different mice by default. Windows also provides the manufactures drivers under optional updates, if the default drivers aren't good enough for you. For me, Nexuiz seems to be a lot smoother on Windows (Both XP and 7).

Desktop composition/window manager: This can be bad on any OS while running a game. Aero impacts performance a lot while running Nexuiz, however, Vista/7 automatically turns off Aero while a game is running in fullscreen (Aero doesn't impact performance at all while outside that mode).. So this isn't a problem with Windows. However, Compiz Fusion or Beryl is very bad on Linux. For one, if you have any effects or window attributes running, it messes up the frame rate badly (e.g. transparency). Also i've noticed, Compiz Fusion fucks up Nexuiz' frame rate BADLY when a tooltip shows up (Or if you're using twhirl, a new tweet tip). It brings it down to ~20 fps when I normally get 400 fps. So again imo, Nexuiz is better on Windows.

Etc etc etc: Nexuiz seems to have more problems on Linux, such as audio disappearing (Fuck you pulseaudio), Nexuiz crashing due to compiz trying to move it to another virtual desktop (Doesn't happen anymore, but it used to be a big problem).

This is just my experience with Linux/Windows with Nexuiz, but if you notice no difference/problems with either one, then by all means don't switch just because someone told you it's better.
Do it yourself, or stop complaining.
