What's the best OS for Nex?

Postby Deathyak » Wed Jul 22, 2009 6:43 am

I love the game but my g5 was lagging down to around 5 frames/s on the min settings on level.

core2duo, 2.66 ghz,
3 gigs ddr3
Nvidia gforce 9400

around 30 frames/s for most maps with GL2 in OS X at 1600x1200 and med. effects

around 100-160 frames/s with GL2 in XP at 2024x[1562?] (which I just discovered is in fact, more pixels than my LCD has lol) and med effects. With rockets, I think it stays around 80.

So my question is this: what is the best for my comp here? Linux or XP? [OSX is here to stay, but not for this]

Linux. Some conspiracy theory says Linux is better because the gfx drivers lacks some features.
But that is totally false in my experience.

linux, cause it's really easy to compile darkplaces on your own with some optimisation switches which might result in some extra fps
I use that on my core duo:
Code: Select all
-pipe -O3 -march=prescott -fomit-frame-pointer -mfpmath=sse -msse -msse2 -msse3
But be careful, there are some flags which are harmfull, look into makefile.inc, it's noted there

Overall Linux handles Nexuiz better. The only time I've seen Windows handle Nexuiz better were when I used an ATI Power Color PoS AGP card and a standard PCI NVidia Geforce 6200. Every other card I tried, Nexuiz worked better on Linux.
I have left this website with the rest of the GPL Nexuiz community. You can find us at Xonotic.org

Well, i use Debian (sid) on my production and development machine (Laptop), but for new users, I'd recommend Kubuntu (cause I don't like Gnome)
