It's not Macbook Pro is it? I'm looking up some specs right now, if we can find what your video card is then I can tell you one of the messier ways to install the latest driver. This isn't looking good at all, the only specs I've pulled up were for early 2008 regular Macbook. Ready for this? Intel GMA X3100 with up to 144MB shared (uses your system RAM for video memory instead of having it's own). If that is what your system has then you'd be lucky to get any 3D app made with in the last six years to run smoothly on decent settings. Once again, check to make sure your not using a Pro because the pro model actually has a usable video device for 3D apps.

Nope, regular MacBook. And actually, Nexuz runs rather nicely in OS X (I get a decent framerate playing with all the fancy stuff turned off, which is recommend in the FAQ anyway, I believe). It's just the Linux side that doesn't run so well.

Tried Nexuiz on Windows. Suffice it to say I'll be sticking with Snow Leopard for Nexuiz.

In an interview with the developpers of Arch Linux, this was said:

Pretty much summarizes.

Strictly using it on my gaming rig (yes I run Windows games on this) for about a year now I'm now asking the question "was Windows worth the trouble?" every time I get behind the desk of someone else's computer. I find Windows HARDER to use now do to it being so unforgiving. Sure on Linux it may be a bitch to tweak stuff that wasn't intended to run on it in the first place, but at least the operating system stays the hell out of my way and let's me do what I want with it. Usually when I create a WINE prefix in PlayOnLinux and tweak something, all I have to do is put a launcher in my menu and forget about it. To me that aint too big of a hassle. Install, tweak, place shortcut, and forget about it, That's the hardest part about Linux for me. Not a big deal at all as you can usually pull up the WINE app DB and see what other people did or use a script on PlayOnLinux to do the hard work for you. Windows on the other hand it seems the older the program, the least likely it is to work; it's losing it's capability to run legacy stuff whereas Linux can run most new stuff in addition to handling legacy programs (Unreal Tournament's Windows client for example runs best in WINE) better than Windows XP and above. On top of that Vista and 7 get in my way constantly bugging me about permissions where Ubuntu and other user friendly distros are subtle about it usually only doing it when your installing off the internet or updating a program. Linux has it's tricky points, but it's not nearly as annoying as Windows glass jaw that constantly has to be protected with anti-malware and it's annoying tendency to slow down over time in addition to losing compatibility with older software. To me it had it's learning curve, but once I got over it, I immediately purged my drive, installed Ubuntu (then 7.10) 64, and transferred my XP license to a friend who wanted it. I found Linux to be a fun family of operating systems with extremely low maintenance, high-performance, and high-level of reliability.

Though put together sloppy, I hope this post will be of some help to somebody considering Linux. If you want to throw yourself at a Linux then I would recommend dual-booting your drive with both Windows and Ubuntu. If you become more experienced you may want to throw yourself at a more advanced distro. If you simply decide Linux isn't for you, then it may not be, but more than likely there is a distro out there that will suit you. Right now I'm running Linux Mint Gloria and I can honestly say this is the happiest I've ever been in front of a computer.

Yes, linux is worth the 'trouble'. Instead of running a window manager, running an alarm-clock, displaying the time, keeping track of what should be on the desktop... You simply login and use xterm for that session. type nexuiz and see an easy +10fps. How could you not want that? Ubuntu install involves clicking 'install' and waiting. Maybe you should try a live cd. Linux isn't what it was ten years ago, Windows is.

And were you using xterm as a WM? It's available when you login, Look down at the bottom where it says 'SESSION: [GNOME|V]'. It's a drop-down. Select xterm.

Far as I'm concerned, apt-get is for people who are too lazy to find the install button.

Granted, this is used primarily on Debian-based distros, but it still doesn't fit well with me.

Windows is easy. Click click and it's done.

When it comes to Nexuiz, just about everything has been prepared by the developers, you don't need to do a whole lot of tweaking or make things in advance, whether you're on Windows, Linux, Mac or any other OS that can run Nexuiz.

If you're not a programmer or web developer, then you can stick to Windows if you want, though it might be useful to learn Linux, just for the hell of it.

And honestly, I don't get people who somehow manage to screw up their Windows install, despite all the information that's out there. Several millions of people can do it, yet if one person complains, it's suddenly a reason to start bashing Windows a bit more >_>
