Mouse

I saw a recommendation for nexuiz on a messageboard, so I installed it, and I'm having some trouble. :?

The following are my machine specs:
Compaq presario R4012us laptop (completely updated using yum)
Fedora Core 5 Linux
AMD64 3200+ Processor
2GB DDR333 Ram
80GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon Xpress 200M Video (128MB)
1280x800 WXGA Widescreen

When I run Nexuiz, the mouse (or touchpad) take several seconds to respond and is nearly impossible to control. It's so bad, i can't even get the game started. I don't think it's the mouse because using the arrow keys to navigate still produces the same behavior.

Any ideas why the performance is so poor? I really want to try out this game. Thanks

From what you are telling i guess your graphic drivers might not be set up correctly for 3D acceleration.
You can test that by opening a xterm and execute
Code: Select all
glxinfo | grep render

If 3D acceleration is working, it should say "direct rendering: Yes". If it says "no", try to search for a package fglrx or download the latest drivers from ati.com

It says:
direct rendering: Yes
GLX_ATI_render_texture
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON XPRESS 200M Series Generic

I'm afraid the ATI Radeon express doesn't keep what ATI promises. Afaik it's using shared memory and isn't powerful at all.

You can test Your framerate by opening the console and typing this command:

Code: Select all
showfps 1

Now You can see Your framerate (means the performance of your laptop).

Be sure to use the lowest quality settings by adding + low.cfg to the commandline for starting Nexuiz.

You're right about the shared memory. I had to switch it in the bios or the ati driver prvented me from booting. I thought adding the 2GB ram would be sufficient, but I guess not.

BTW, when I type showfps 1 from the command line, it says command not found. Any idea about that? I'm curious about the framerate.

I wish I'd known how much ati sucks before I bought this laptop. Compaq won't make any 64-bit Windows drivers either.

Thanks anyway.

Strange, here it works. Anyway:

In the Nexuiz subfolder \data you will find a file config.cfg. Open it with text editor and scroll down. Search for the line 'showpfs' and set the value to 1 (instead of 0).

Save and close.

Done, start the game

shame on you urmel... :D :D
the 'true' console command is :

Code: Select all
set showfps 1

there isn't any 'showfps' command, right, but the "set" command exists ;)

Brace to learn something new :)
You do not need the 'set' command to change existing variables.. variablename newvalue is enough to change it. You only need the 'set' command to create a new variable. You might have getten a wrong impression because most of the time i write 'set variable value' because it feels 'saver' ;)
Urmel just made a typo pfs instead of fps :)
