ctf icons & respawn delay

Postby dIM » Sun Jan 21, 2007 3:02 pm

I yesterday played on a ctf server that had a increased player respawn time (rbi?) , despite i had the impression that it was not always the same time one had to wait (sometimes announcer starts with 3,2... ; sometimes 7,6,5..), what really was annoying, was the fact that there are no flag status icons displayed during waiting. It is really torturing when sitting there not able to do anything and than not even know what is going on.
I guess it is because one is placed in a kind of spectator mode and ofcourse flag status for normal spectator mode wouldnt make much sense, but maybe it could be changed for players that already joined a team.

the new spawn feature thats up for testing on rbi is 'waves spawn'.. i\f you get fragged within a wave you will have to wait for it to end before you \will respawn. thats done so 1 sniper can no longer sit here and sniper on fac\ing worlds as everyone spawn at the same time and it will also influence balancing.. will be interesting if it helps\ or hinders captures.
Wave means this countdown just starts, runs down and starts again, so when ever people get fragged they have the same 'rest' countdown to wait.

No, can't be changed, the thing is, the engine does not display the HUD when you are dead. Thus no icons... and we can't change that.

Once we can use our own code to draw these icons (CSQC), this problem will get fixed.

As for the different respawn time, please be a bit patient - when 2.2.3 is out, this will be explained and discussed on the forum.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

*threadjacks*

Once you can draw your own hud, I take it that you can completely change it, right? Could you add an option to toggle team info (so that you see team members' health, location, etc in a panel in the corner)? What about team radar? What about a crystal ball that predicts the future and includes a weekly winning lottery ticket number?

Aww, jeez, not this wave spawning shit, why to ruin a well established thing through 10 years???
I'm starting to get annoyed by these "game balance" changes, as they ruin the oldschool "spawn-grabweapon-rage" feeling of Nexuiz. I realy hope this won't be the default setting, and if, at least one european server remains old-style.
I understand we should get more players, but not by making nexuiz awkward. I mean c'mon, if a noon gets 0wn3d in it's first game, and delets it, then he's the bad gamer - not those, who are playing it for now almost two years, and have experience - and especially, not the game is the bad, becouse it's hard to start...
If I've hurt somebodys feelings, simply ignore this post.

It's a style already adoped by a lot of team-based strategy games. I couldn't see it being common in DM games, but for CTF (and future team-oriented game styles that may appear) it could be useful.

I have only seen this behavior in Day of Defeat. After a while the game stucked.

Well thats why this feature is disabled in 2.2.3 by default (rbi is just to test if that feature works) but it will be up for discussion. That waves thing can be configured for several game modes I do not really see it as a bad thing. Might make ctf more interesting. We'll see what people think about it when they can try for them selfs.

Oh and a team overlay showing the name, health, armor, weapon and maybe location of team members would be nice but i think a team radar is not good in Nexuiz..

Team radar - maybe. We can't display a minimap (that is, unless all mappers make us one as a JPEG file). But Tribes-ish arrows to indicate where and how far the flag is could be cool. A radar however would JUST contain one color, some circles and would be empty...

As for wave spawning - soon 2.2.3 will be out. With wave spawning disabled. Then we'll start a forum poll. I guess the majority will NOT want it. Once that happens, the RBI server will have it disabled too.

Now, if the majority wants that, it could be the case that even 2.3 will get it...

also, at the same time, we'll start a poll what to do with DM's respawn time. Currently it's two seconds, but as Vermeulen said, that was a bug and it should always have been half a second.
