Hmm. SpeeX is a suitable free codec that could be used, but that's only one part of the puzzle. To implement VoIP Nexuiz will need mixing code at the server, admin code (to mute the squeakers) and last but not least, protocol changes to handle the voice data. I don't think this would be an easy task.

VoIP is one of the things i really DONT want to see, especially not before the netcode improved a lot more. Using third party Software is not a big deal, just get Teamspeak, Firetalk, Skype or whatever and use public servers.

Might be interesting to have a/some Teamspeak servers for nexuiz players ...

When I look at games like Battlefield, I recognize they are realistic war simulations, unlike Nexuiz.

I think this is a poor argument. Plenty of genres use voice communication, look at XBOX live. Voice chat would undoubtedly improve CTF gameplay, however I believe Bundy has made some valid points. 1) Netcode would be need to be improved first and 2) There are 3rd party solutions available.

Oh, I think my post was a little short so I could have been misunderstood. I'd quote all of Bundy's arguments. In addition a game like Battlefield essentially needs implemented voice communication features, much more than Nexuiz, as its gameplay is highly based on multiplayer tactics by nature. Nexuiz has some teamplayer modes, but isn't mainly a tactical shooter like Battlefield.

On Nexuiz, the "quests" are much more simple, the maps are much smaller, it's rather a stupid oldschool shooter and for that the priority of a built-in voice-based communication is very low. I'd really say, the way the game servers are accessible now for all kinds of unmotivated nonsense participants would make a feature like that almost not usable. (Think XSAX!)

I hope my humble english was enough to express myself clearly enough now?

Using Halo 2 as an example of a game that implements team play in the same manner as Nexuiz, you'll see team play is vastly improved amongst teams with headsets vs. teams without. You'll have your run-of-the-mill jackasses that try to ruin the gaming experience but I do believe the positives outweigh the negatives in this situation.

Plus, player mute sh/w/could be an option.
