On packages and repositories

Postby [-z-] » Fri May 30, 2008 5:44 pm

The current ubuntu package is version 2.4. With the whole mix of 2.4, 2.4.1 and 2.4.2, I'm thinking most of us want to move towards 2.4.2 as soon as possible, being the most stable, well rounded build for the most people.

div mentioned this was getting updated asap.

With package managers, I can tell my friends to try out the game and it's easy as heck. I know downloading an archive to my desktop and running the respective startup program will give me the results just as easy but some of my friends don't. Heck for the sake of keeping my system clean, I prefer the package manager.

The point of all this ramble is I think perhaps we should start brain storming about getting packages into order for all different distributions, trying to make sure they are up to date as fast as possible.

Can a script be written to package Nexuiz on updates to make this easier?

Technically it would be very easy however distros have their own procedures to follow for packages going into repositories. Nexuiz is actually kept fairly modern by most distros. It seems like Ubuntu has hardly ever had an up to date OOo which isn't horribly broken. For a long time they also considered the 1.9.122 beta release as "stable" while 2.0 was considered "unstable" and by the time they put 2.0 in stable, 2.0.1 was out.

This is actually pretty accurate:
Only "stable" software is included in the Debian core distribution. In Debian project parlance, the term stable means that the software is no longer under active development or widespread use and that the authors are long dead; if software is still under active development, it undergoes changes too rapidly for the Debian project to incorporate them. Due to pressure from users, obsolete versions of certain software that is still under development may be included in the non-stable section, but its use is broadly discouraged, since it does not strictly adhere to the project's guidelines, sometimes including software from after the renaissance.
