Unfortunately I don't have any time to contribute much myself, but I have a suggestion for the new movie:
What about some kind of mixture of a documentation and advertisement, i.e. being similar to a product presentation demo. With this I mean that there is some kind of moderator who is talking in english while background music is being played and gamescenes are being shown. Of course the moderator doesn't have to talk all the time, I think you understand how I mean it.
Back then when I had the idea about such a movie, I created a tree of all kind of information that could be candidates of being included in such a movie. There could probably a short version of that movie with a length of about 2 minutes at max, and a longer version for the interested players who'd like to find out more.
Such a longer movie would not only be efficient with drawing the attention of the viewer, it could, at the same time, act as "Getting started" help explaining a few elements of the game that are not always understood right from the beginning
OK, here's my list:
- General gameplay
- weapons
- uniqueness of the weapons (explaining what it does)
- alternative firemodes
- explosions triggered by other weapons (i.e. others can detonate your rocket)
- damage through walls/floor
- ammo system
- ammo can be picked up before having a weapon for it, still gets accounted
- ammo stacks up until unlimited (basically, till 999 shots)
- respawn times
- dedicated ammo for shotgun and MG, shared ammo (cells/rockets)
- picking up a weapon gives you as much ammo as one ammo pack
- switching the weapon is quite fast (unlike other games where you have to wait until their reload time has passed)
- health & armor system
- unlimited pickup of health and armor possible (as opposed to other games)
- respawn times
- describing the armor and health items (medium, small, large)
- describe health and armor rotting, how you can prevent by picking items every 5 seconds, etc
- movement
- general acceleration through jumping
- the powerful air-control (i.e. showing examples)
- ramp jumps (examples!!)
- weapon jumps, combinaion of projectiles (e.g. mortar grenade with 2ndary firemode, plus laser as a combo, or jsut usual rocketjump)
- the maps: maybe show the different styles, tell about the number of maps, specialties, popularities, whatever you can think of
- Game modes and modifications
- describing each gamemode, show examples. of course the detail of how much is described should depend on the popularity of the game mode.
- describe the modificator system, explain a few (instagib, rocket arena, homing missiles, ...)
- The nexuiz community
- mention the helpful, friendly community (forums)
- character of the open source game: community influences the outcome of the game (e.g. polls in the AT forum)
- mention the vivid participation of creating content by the community (e.g. sounds, models, textures, code and of course the maps) and that the content also become part of Nexuiz when being of high quality
- mention community pages, such as the ouns wiki, nexuizninjaz and a few others
- IRC channels
- The communities: mention the FFA scene and the competitive scene which are the 2 major ones IMO. This should create a sense of what the user is actually doing when playing. Most of the players automatically go for FFA only without really knowing the difference or the world around it. This could change it.
- FFA Gameplay (explain what is meant with it, can be briefly of course)
- competitive gameplay: Mention ladder, tourney(s), clans, competitive features like fullbright skins, shootfrom center, ready/restart (warmup), tweakability of graphics (this could also go to another part, to show that nexuiz is quite scalable in performance/looks), auto demo and screenshots
This list only contains aspects of the game or community in no particular order, it also doesn't list things that are needed for such a movie, like a short introduction or what ever. It is mainly a list of differences to other games, and shows what is making nexuiz special and worthy to play.
