Mac support is back (was: Nexuiz Mac support discontinued)

Postby divVerent » Sun Oct 26, 2008 3:45 pm

Hereby, I officially DISCONTINUE OS X support of Nexuiz. We can no longer build the engine for OS X, and have no way to fix it.

Reason: no more build machine. The machine we used is no longer accessible to us. Thanks to Willis who provided it to us, but he can no longer.

To get Mac builds running, we need a 24/7 running OS X computer with a fixed IP or DNS name (at least running 10.4) with a current XCode and SDL framework installed. Whether it is PPC or Intel does not matter. We'd need shell access using SSH to that machine (ideally with a shell account created specially for us, it needs no administrator privileges), to continue making OS X builds as part of the regular build process (which is also used for the testing builds).

If no such access is provided to us by anyone, there will be no more Mac builds. As simple as that.

1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Oh, and BTW, we are not going to do anything illegal like using a hacked OS X in VMWare. Sure, it DOES work, but it'll get us into big legal trouble.

Whoa, whoa. The answer is very simple: Either someone donates their Mac to the cause, or we pool money to buy one.

Some questions:

- Are there any system requirements for the Mac? Could it be an old one (one can buy a used Mac for quite cheap, this might be an option.)

- Can the Mac be anywhere? Or would it be better to somehow get it to your location?

I think there are enough Mac players for either donation or purchasing to be viable options. The Mac doesn't need to be new, just functional. The old one was a Mac Mini, right? So it just shouldn't be older than that one.

And the answer to pooling money will be:

"I HAVE money but don't have the TIME to donate it."

"I can donate money but I hate the CURRENCY you accept, Thilandish Bhats are a FAR better currency" (aka "fuck quakeC")

"I can make art that looks like money"

"If only the developerSSSSSS would write documentation on economics"

Nexuiz can't get any code devs from the community. It's surely not going to get a Mac from the community. The community takes but doesn't give (except for a few).

I heard trolling for donations helps.

It's okay to be upset about the sometimes frustrating nature of open-source but I don't believe jumping to conclusions with such assumptions is a cure of any sorts. In a world where community is the most important thing, you're stereotyping fans. You can't expect people to instantly understand Nexuiz the same way you do.

A good leader inspires people. He doesn't attack them blindly. If you're thinking they are "idiots for not seeing" maybe you should mirror that up, and check yourself.

Preferably, the Mac is at a location with somewhat 24/7 power and net access. It can sure be some cable modem or DSL line, it just has to be on 24/7 and reachable via ssh.

And performance of the Mac - no requirements. OS X 10.4 or higher, and Xcode have to run on it, that's all. It can be either Intel or PPC, and a G3 suffices for 10.4.

I was just thinking about that. I dont have a Mac but I'd probably be willing to donate a little cash to the cause.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

I have a few Macs that I can allocate to this, I suppose. I have a MacBook that I had intended on selling, but I can set it up as a development machine for dual booting into 10.4 or 10.5 until a more permanent solution can be sought. I also happen to have an old 500MHz G3 iMac that can only run 10.4.

I had been using the MacBook to hack around in darkplaces (for my own fun) and playing around with maintaining Dresk's Spidflisk QC in parity with the current trunk. I have a network connection that pretty much stays up constantly.

It'd take me a day or two to get the machine rebuilt for a dev-only machine, as it had been my personal computer. And, fwiw, I usually lurk around in IRC as Lixivial.

No exact number is known, but if I count the downloads on my server (assuming each OS's players cause the same number of downloads), we should have 55.6% Windows users, 30.0% Linux users and 14.4% Mac users.
