I care. I have on many occasions hacked software to pieces, could only do that with free/libre open source software.
Some examples:
freeciv was unfun because the game would end at 2000 or if you sent up a space ship... my version has none of these ending conditions.
Q3Map2 has tons of restrictions built into it. Almost all of my maps hit these restrictions. Because Q3map2 is opensource I've been able to hack the restrictions out of it. If Q3map2 was not opensource, and just free in price instead, I would not be here, would not be making maps for nexuiz, wouldn't be on this forum, and wouldn't have made the storylines that go with my maps (as they wouldn't have been made in the firstplace). There wouldn't be 30 "mikeeusa maps" there would be maybe 2 (dastower, blueamuse). I would have given up long ago. I also would have no reason to return to this or any other nexuiz forum.
So no opensource == no modified freeciv and me not being here and my maps never have been created.
