Given this is your first map, and the idea is good, I've voted for good, though I have a few suggestions.

-Item placement is a bit scare. For a fragfest type map, I'd add more health in the main playing arena. More ammo would be useful too. I think it's a bad idea to put all the "heavy weapons" in a pack. Personally, I think those 4 armors are too much in one pack. I'd put them at different parts of the map, eg. on the opposite 4 sides of the walls, like this:

Also, some moer eye-candy could be added. I think columns like this would improve the map a lot:

A little sand here, a little sand there...

On the jumppands, try to use some animated shaders. Look for stock Nexuiz maps how it's made.

Also, given this is an ancient playground, I'd think it's old enough to have some broken pillars, or missing bricks here and there on the floor or the walls, like this:

Now, on the editing part. I've seen You have used "caulk" on the outer parts of the map. Good. But you should use caulk on every single side you can't see :)
There are a lot 's of T-juktions. You can improve the map's performance by fixing them like this:

Also, all the spawn points are facing the same direction:

DETAIL BRUSHES! A detail brush is a type of brush that does not block the -VIS stage of the compiler. In short, any brush that does not provide structure/seal to a room, and merely is there to detail the room, should be made a detail brush. Like the whole structure on the centre :)

These are the thing come to my mind now. Keep up the good work, I think this gonna be a very good map after some polishing work :)

EXCELLENT advice! Thank you...I really appreciate you taking the time. I have two questions:

1. Where you joined the "T" junctions...how did you do that?

2. How do you apply decals to specific areas (this would be useful for the damaged tiles in places)?

Sorry for the noobie questions, and thank you again!

Use the clipper, and cut each brush at a 45 degree angle.
