Crimson Mountain

Postby MirceaKitsune » Tue Nov 18, 2008 4:15 pm

Today I finished making my first Nexuiz map. Initially I was intending to propose it for an official map but looking back at it I don't think I made it good enough so it can qualify for such a thing. Either way I was pretty curious to share it here and see what everyone thinks. I spent one week working on it 24/7 to make it good and did my best to arrange everything at its place and take care of everything.

Crimson Mountain is a medium-large outdoor map created mainly off terrain and with ruins placed around it. The environment of the map is an ancient / medieval type and the action takes place on a mountain covered in a dark red fog. One thing I wanted to add were torches but sadly I couldn't get func_pointparticles working well in the SVN so I couldn't obtain a good fire generator for them. One feature of the map is that first of all, it's a terrain based map... the terrain is created in the same way as ONS-Reborn's. Another thing is that I went very in-depth on using caulk on every single hidden surface that I found, and unless I forgot something every surface that doesn't display is caulked. I also made sure to add hint brushes all around the map and applied player clips everywhere they were needed, especially around the borders so people couldn't get there to see the fake terrain edge.

My worst regret about this map is that I ran out of both energy and ideas alike to add more detail around it. I added something in every place so the map won't appear as an empty terrain but I'm still not sure if that's enough. Don't think my map will make it officially because of that (that's up to the developers but just for the note if anyone wants to include the map with the game that's perfectly ok for me if you think it's good enough). The main reason I wanted to make this for an official map is that I want to encourage making more terrain maps around the game and officially into it, since Reborn is the only one so far.

Gametypes I included are: DM, TDM, LMS, Rune, Keyhunt, DOM and CTF (the CTF version is on the same map since no geometry changes were required). Download locations -here- or -here- if the first link doesn't work. A few screenshots of the map here:

Posted the download locations at the end of the first post. Should have probably not made them so small.

I had a look, it looks very nice. Very smooth. My performance was fine but to fully judge I'd need to play it at some point.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

Yeah, I had a go at it by myself. Looked good and all and it's much so different than the other maps. But trying it out with additional players first is needed before I can fully judge the map.
I loved the feel of it do, kinda like Battlezone where you hover over the landscape :) One of my favorite games.
I noticed however, some texture issues where you could clearly see the textures didn't fit. One such an example is where the mortar is. You can see the texture switch. Now I don't know how hard/easy it is to do texture blending but if you could that would be awesome.

I felt like it lacked flow and needs more building structures. The textures you used for the floor of that destroyed building were nice. There was some player clipping that made me upset. I'll try to get you screenshots later.

Also, the portals seemed to placed rather randomly. I think you should aim more for a terrain/building hybrid, much like ctctf6, moonstone or some of those other quake3 maps. It just feels a bit too... empty and open.

I kinda too wanted to mentioned that it might feel empty and placing some more structures here and there to give it some recognizable features. Right now it's kinda confusing of where you are on the map. But I didn't say anything as I haven't tried it with players yet so I don't know how well it works. This emptyness might work, but I see MG and Nex spamming.
But I also loved how it was empty as this is so different, yet cool. Lasering across the map was fun.
Possibly make some hills hollow so you can enter them and place some weapons there or something :)

Emptiness is a novelty, to get a map to "stick" I believe it needs more structure and flow.
