Deck16][ (UT port)

Postby MirceaKitsune » Mon Jun 29, 2009 11:51 pm

Anyone who played UT even for a short while has to know Deck 16, the most common map from the old Unreal Tournament game. Since many Nexuiz players are also UT fans and Deck 16 was a very loved map I decided to port it to Nexuiz :)

Deck16 for Nexuiz tries to be a matching port of the original UT map... of course since I had to rebuild all brushes by eye not all proportions, rooms and sizes will match. Item placement (including player starts) are the same with small exceptions. I used the best matching weapons in Nexuiz for each UT gun (eg. Electro for Shock Rifle, HLAC for Pulse Gun, Hagar for Flak Cannon) so gameplay and the overall feel should be pretty similar. Since its the only super-weapon in Nexuiz, I used the Minstagib for the Redeemer (don't worry, its set to respawn every 2 minutes and gives 10 cells / 1 shot only unless the player picked up more ammo, so please spare my toaster and cat ;) ) For more nostalgic players like myself I included the original screenshot and map song from UT (hell Epic shouldn't mind). Map available for all non-objective gametypes and I also added Domination even if it didn't exist in the original.

The map is free for anyone to further modify or port to other quake-based games (now that there's a brush arrangement for Radiant it should make it easy to spread Deck16 to many games). So yeah... for all UT fans, Deck 16 for Nexuiz :D Download link, backup link, enjoy.

[EDIT] For server owners who live in modern communist countries where one can get in legal trouble for distributing a 11 year old song in a game map, I also made a version which uses a song from Nexuiz and has a screenshot of the ported map. Links here and here, but this isn't as good as the version in the links above.

[EDIT 2] Removed the minstanex and replaced it with the Shield powerup, it's better that way.

You should make a free version, without the copyvios :P
Or else, server admins will get in trouble.

Besides this, it looks quite awesome. I have never played UT though :p
Meh.

Ronan, I'm glad the brushwork looks clean. I was most worried that, since I had to fine tune every brush to have it match as well as possible (and used many subtracts) I went down to small grids while the official Nexuiz maps don't go too low, so I wasn't sure if the brushes were rather buggy or not.

And Mr. Bougo, this version is free, just that I also ported the song to make it feel as UTish as possible :) The classic UT is 11 years old, I don't think Epic Games would ever attempt to say anything for a song from a game half my age, mainly since it doesn't have what loss to bring them. If anyone is really scared about that song they can remove it and set a track from Nexuiz in the .mapinfo if they use the map on a server, though imo that shouldn't be a problem. The song can be listened to here if anyone wishes.

I'm sorry, but you're saying it's free, then explaining exactly why it isn't.

Everything should be as GPL-compatible as possible, because server admins don't want to get in trouble with legal stuff... And having different versions of the map distributed by different server admins would get quite confusing. It would be great if the legal version came from you.
Meh.

I don't think a map can be called "illegal" just because it contains a song from a 11 year old game... it's not a pack of drugs. This version is ok imo, I would bet my head no server admin could get in any sort of trouble just for having a map with this song, I think that would be hilarious and shocking to happen. If everyone really insists I can pack a version without the song and give both, but I don't see any big reason to do that (there are many maps around public servers which have commercial songs in them, much more likely to get one in trouble then this if such a thing would be happening).

I don't think parking can be called "illegal" just because there is a no parking sign next to the car... it's not drunk driving.

I don't think your actions can be called "illegal" just because they contain beating up your neighbor... it's not murder.

The map sure is illegal, but indeed many do not care. Maybe make two versions of it, one with the song and one without (and without other possibly copyrighted data that's not by you), and put the second version under the GPL. Then it's up to the server admins what to choose.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

I'll think about it, though for now I'm keeping the map as it is. Don't get me wrong, but I honestly don't wish to change it just to encourage more of this "license terror". I mean real legal trouble in including a song from a game map... I may sound weird but to me that's crazy, and I'm a content maker too (yeah I'm not from America, at my place such things don't go that far). At worst it's not nice, if redistributing the song could offend the author which I don't think at this point should. Maybe I'll repack it some other time... for now just delete the song and replace it from the .mapinfo if anyone really wants to, there shouldn't be any packet conflicts if you also rename the .pk3. Cd track 18 (sixtyfour_revisited) is the best matching song from the Nexuiz soundtrack.

I put this on my public DM server (HODM) and the general consensus was good, except some felt like the map had too many weapons and too much ammo. There were about 20 players on it, so it was a packed server.

Guess who won? The player who kept grabbing the minstanex.
It was a bad idea to put that weapon on a DM map.

So I'm going to use mapinfo to replace the minstanex (and the hlac too).

hmm, I'll just repack it while I'm at it, without the music.

Eh, I decided to make a version of the map without the music and screenshot in the end... this also makes the pack file smaller. If you want it you can get it from the first post though it's not as good as the other one.

As for the minstanex its set to 2 minutes respawn time and minimum ammo (so the player can't camp there). Couldn't think of anything better to use... maybe in a future edit I'll replace it with Strength.
