[CTF Map] Ancient

Postby Sepelio » Mon Mar 08, 2010 11:53 am

Well I was going to add support for DOM and ONS but I couldn't be arsed. I also considered just not releasing this but I'm going to anyway otherwise it renders the entire excercise pointless.

Fairly simple open ctf maps people seem to like a lot. So I made one that ruins line of sight with trees so its much harder to see across. Take that, campers!

Used a multitude of textures. Some from opengameart.org, all gpl or public. Made the bumpmaps for the stone textures myself (poorly).

Enjoy. Please inform me asap if there are missing textures/models/gophers.

I should, but caulking doesn't seem to make a great deal of difference. Its supposed to reduce compile time as far as I am aware, but I just let my machine crunch through it. Normally I do caulk everything but I felt lazy today :)

As to hinting its not something I'm confident to be able to do well.

Hinting probably won't have too much of an effect, since the map is quite open.

What I would suggest is to improve the lights. Especially from the skyshader, since the map does not at all reflect the fact that there is an unobscured sun (for example no real shadows from the trees), and at some places it's completely wrong:

I never noticed. For some reason that seems to be one of the few skyboxes that is lit at all. Normally I used ones from the archive but they never seem to work quite right.

Wow it looks beautiful. Downloading now.

EDIT

Minor complaint: Bloom and HDR wash the textures out on this map. It looks beautiful when bloom and HDR are disabled though and more importantly it plays well.

Cheers.

Yeah I'd expect the ground texture to look washed out its very light. Once the map gets more testing I'll maybe darken and replace it or something. Its not up on any servers yet that I am aware of :(
