The day my games look so realistic that I can't tell them from real life is the day I give up playing games.

I want to shoot a guy and have him explode into a bunch of indistiguishable gibs, not shoot him and feel like I've just commited some atrocious murder.

Totally seconded. Super-realism in first person shooters is just sickening. Even the severe, seizure-like twitching that people did in Unreal Tournament when you nailed them with the minigun was disturbing enough.

I am not really shooting for photorealism, just moderately well done. I agree with ihsan that we need to show people that we can rival other commercial games. That will bring people over to our fold, but what will really keep them here is the gameplay.

Of course everyone has a bit of a "graphics fetish", i know I do. But we don't need to have high poly models to have a beautiful game, usually you can create the illusion by making well designed textures. That is what I am shooting for. The key to realism are the textures.

Anyways, whether or not the character fits is not really a problem because it seems like this project is just going to continue to evolve over time, right. We'll eventually redo the levels. And if that is the case than more realistic models won't feel out of place. At least that is what I'd like to see happen. Of course I would like the game remain over the top when it comes to gore, monsters, and massive weaponry.

here's the first few hours of work. Nothing special, but I plan on replacing all the textures later.

Is this the end?

After looking at the workflow of doing a truly photorealistic environment, it is now clear to me that you must choose a real place which you have full access to.
Photographs are just not enough.
I can probably do my 3 room apartment but It would be the most boring map ever made.
I think i have to forfeit this challenge.
