So what, is that like a limitation of the Darkplaces engine? You can't have weapons in the upper half of the screen? Any way to change that somehow? Maybe contact Darkplaces' creators?

Most game have the weapons in the lower half of the screen (hud). I personally wouldn't want it in the upper right or left hand corner. But to give you an example, a new game Team Fortress 2 has a RL mounted on the shoulder of the player model, but in first person view you still see it in the lower right hand corner.

DP already allows for different weapon placement on the models if that's all you want.

Gotcha. I still reckon it might look okay in the top half of the screen or at least higher up than say the Half-Life one.

For example the rocket launcher in Halo 2 isn't shoulder mounted (although it might be come to think of it), but it uses quite a lot of the screen and looks cool..

The halo RL is basically overpowered and the model is meant to reflect that. You aren't meant to be running around with it for an extended period of time so the fact that it obscures 20% of the screen isn't a problem. Nexuiz is, of course, different.

I like RL the way it is, maybe its missing a little detail but the concept is good.

Good point, I totally see what you mean.

That said, it still looks really cool. Something that was kind of half-way between that and the Half-Life RPG would be good.

Actually this one from AVP2 looks quite good, although again it uses too much of the screen:

It'd be good to have something like that but maybe pulled a bit further back or a bit smaller or something.

BTW It'd also be nice to have a cool trail on the rockets. On this old game called syndicate, you got a really nice trail, that was basically a load of puffs of smoke coming out of the rocket as it fired. It looked really powerful. You can see it firing in the screenshot in the middle of the 9 Amiga ones here:

There's also a really low framerate video (3 seconds long) at the bottom of the following page that kind of shows it in action, though it looked better in the game.
