The first 2 screens are from dmtower (a custom map), the last one is silvercity.

I must say silvercity looks cool with black fog, and black sky. Very creepy looking ;)

Note that dmtower is one of the ugliest maps ever, but fun to play... and the screenshots are really good... looks like fog is what the map needs :P
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

I tell ya... fog can really add a cool mood to a map. Either a dark spooky feel, dusty gun smoke, smooth light or biohazard. But it's difficult to make it look good because it depends on your video settings, effects and the map. So everyone has to adjust it by one self.

Is there any way to make a map use fog by default? I'm making a map which needs fog to look right

You can set the values with your mapcfg file, as whatever is in it is used as the map is launched. So all of the fog values would appear at the map's start (though the user could turn it off after the map is loaded)

The syntax for fog is

fog <density> <red> <green> <blue>

(e.g. fog 0.1 1 1 1 for thick white fog)

I recommend putting that into the worldspawn of the map, not into a config file. Just add another key.
