Afaik that an official q3 map, so any download would be illegal. If you have q3, you could try to extract the map, but since you are not allowed to distribute the map, you could only use it in bot matches.

I found a 3rd party map that is similar to q3dm17, would it be ok to use a map like that online with a buddy? Well after I figure out some of this texture crap?

I do believe that the map sources for q3dm17, q3dm1, and q3dm7 were released to the public a few years ago by id Software. Converting it, or at least using it as a base for Nexuiz would be pretty easy stuff. I'm not sure if the maps were issued as GPL or not(it was packaged with Q3Radiant source, and didn't really say), but at the very least, they can serve as a template in order to make a "remake".

As usual Irritant is right.

Those maps are part of the Q3 game pack for GTKRadiant.

However, I wouldn't bet that means those map sources are GPLed, I just don't know.

q3dm17 is one of the Best Maps Ever, and must, by law, be included in any first person shooter. You don't want to break the law, do you?

Is it just me that heard the q3 source code is GPL? Ain't u allowed to use the maps then :shock:

Nope, you're not. The engine source code is GPL-ed, not the media.

The engine source and the source to media stuff is a totally different thing. So far only sources for the engines and some (all?) quake 1 (ONE) maps were released as GPL.
