A dense plasma focus (DPF) is a plasma machine that produces, by electromagnetic acceleration and compression, short-lived plasma that is so hot and dense that it becomes a copious multi-radiation source. It was invented in the early 1960s by J.W. Mather and also independently by N.V. Filippov. The electromagnetic compression of a plasma is called a "pinch". The plasma focus is similar to the high-intensity plasma gun device (HIPGD) (or just plasma gun), which ejects plasma in the form of a plasmoid, without pinching it.

Pulsed Energy Projectile or PEP is a technology of non-lethal weaponry currently under development by the U.S. military. The problem is that that's not what the "laser" does. The "laser"- besides causing a small amount of damage - inflicts the target with a huge momentum (aka impulse), which is why the target goes flying into the air. I don't know what kind of physics would have to be involved to do something like that, but if we give the "laser" a name that just describes what it does, we don't have to worry about the how.

Nexuiz needs weapons of this caliber.

I entirely agree. If we are not aiming at that or BETTER nexuiz will lag further and further behind commercial games.
Before anybody says that nexuiz is "just" an opensource game let me say that opensource does not mean lame.

Making 3d models like that are not difficult, just time consuming. If the work of creating it was split up among multiple artists we would have had this quality long ago. it's time we tackled content creation as a project instead of everybody doing a little bit here and there.

The workflow is simple:
1. Decide among ourselves the basic idea behind the weapon design.
2. Do multiple concept drawings until every visual detail is figured out.
3. Low polygon modeling with UV.
4. High polygon sculpt for normalmaps.
5. Texture, Specular, Bump, Normalmaps
6. Rigging.
7. Export zym and md3.
8. Make PK3 for distribution.

Very few of us have all the skills, software or time to do all of this so it can't be a 1 man job. In commercial game studios it certainly isn't.

Personally I can do an acceptable job of almost all the steps except the rigging and the zym export (6 and 7) so i still can't get any of my human or weapon models into nexuiz

i think C.Brutail played to much quake because that looks really like a lightning gun and with some work that could be a lightning mod( if someone does the programming part )

Imo, the weapons should look more consistent.. Currently the weapons dont look similar to eachother much, but the energy weapons do look like energy weapons

actually i like the differences in the weapon styles, it makes sense:
the different races in Nexuiz: cyborgs, mutants, various aliens, etc....

or do you think there should be one major intergalactic arms manufacturer? the Electro already has the "AT Corp" brand. i wouldnt mind nice new polished weapon models.

btw, wasnt there someone writing a Nexuiz story?
