Players rendered black

Postby Clueless Newbie » Sun Aug 26, 2007 8:42 am

In a level I released recently (Torus: http://www.notam02.no/~clund/nexuiz/Torus.pk3 ), it turns out that the players are all rendered as black silhouettes - except for the glowy bits.

What causes this and how do I fix it? The level is otherwise well lit.

The textures are too bright, and there is not enough light.

However, you CAN fix the map afterwards using my tool from http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopi ... t=bsp+tool

(the screenshot... oops, I overwrote it...)

In your case:

cp torus.bsp torus-new.bsp; ./bspscale torus-new.bsp lg-mul 3 3 3

and all players/etc. get three times as bright.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Hmm.. What I get from your link is an uncompiled c file. How do I use this? Do I compile it and then ...?

But I'll try making the textures darker and increasing the lights.

I have now made the textures darker (first darker by 66%, and then by 50%), and increased the lights. A lot.
What I discovered is that when I do a fast compile, like this:

-deluxemap
-fastbounce
-faster
-fastgrid
-bounce 8
-samples 8

The player colours are fully visible - just like with the version that I uploaded a couple of days ago. But when I do the final compile, like this:

-bouncegrid
-deluxemap
-shade
-bounce 8
-samples 8

- the result are players that are displayed as black outlines while the textures still get too bright, I didn't have this problem with RustVents / SmallVents.
