Onslaught mode for Nexuiz.

Postby Urre » Mon Oct 01, 2007 1:51 pm

I think it's time to start talking about this, even though I wanted to keep it half-secret until I had something to show which people can understand.

The past time I've been working on a QC physics engine, which would allow cool physics objects like crates that can tip over, fly around and bounce realisticly, or grenades that do the same, much like you see in many more modern games. The more interesting part is that it can also do vehicles (they're not that different from crates, really), so I was wondering if there would be anyone interested in making maps for an Onslaught-like gamemode for Nexuiz, which would be generally outdoor maps, city maps or otherwise very large and open. The gamemode doesn't really have to be Onslaught, I was only referring to something people can relate to, just something that vehicles fit in really. And yes, this would be part of the official Nexuiz release(s), not a separate mod which requires all textures and other content in the map to be GPL.

I'm asking this because I've noticed lowered activity in the Nexuiz community, and I'd hate to see it die out, or me releasing the physics lib without anyone caring to make content for it.

It has a few bugs I need to get rid of, and a couple of features I need to add, but it basicly works. Nothing I can show yet, because the bugs lie in how the objects are presented (the physics work, just the visible model acts strange). The first release (the one planned for Nexuiz) would support hovering vehicles only, which would in my mind fit Nexuiz great.

So please, drop a line in this thread if you're a mapper, and feel like helping out on making this a reality. It's crucial if I'm to concentrate more time on the physics rather than other projects.

so let me get this... there is or will be physics and vehicles in svn nexuiz? that would be great for that new gamemode that is currently in svn (forgot what it's called, it's the one where you destroy stuff and it's all objective-based play)

so... how would I play with this physics library?

we're workin on some vehicles for our MOD ...
we didn start with the code for that till now cause were in the concept phase how to use vehicles ... how strong they should be ... the game that will be used and all that things ...
I have just done some concept models for these vehicles but nothin really interessting for now ...

We Thought about some mini RC Tanks and thislike ... cause we dont want to make those giant maps like battlefield or UT ... that would take too much speed out of the Game ...
However ...
atm were concentrating on making our new weapons and the model replaces for the old ones ...

I'll kepp that in mind ... When we start to do this vehicle things we sure will have a lots of questions ... :)

I'm all for vehicles and beefier physics in Nexuiz.

May work great for biggish CTF maps... or even in DM.

SavageX: yeah, it indeed would. I've always thought the sound of vehicles in ctf sounds awesome. The vehicles obviously don't need to be tied to any gamemode.

If there's time ... i could create some map for vehicles ... so u can test or somethin like this ... by the way ... My question is how far is this physics thing at the moment ... ? ...

Like i said we are just on the concept workin on vehicles and our possibillitys are very limmited atm ... with ur qc physics our limmits could disappear ...

However ... if we can help with anythin ... like a map or somethin we'll look after ...

Advanced physics = very yes. How is performance hit when using it?

DP still needs better support for large, outdoor environments... has anyone done work on that or heard if any work is being done to improve it?

I saw "Onslaught" and "Physics" and thought immediately about the video I saw of UT3, where they demonstraded the new ONS mode. All the nodes have physics-enabled plating. If we could add plating to anything in Nexuiz it would increase in realism and destructive fun. Maybe the vehicles could have that too, like gibs.

But wait: don't gibs already have physics? Or is that too simplistic for vehicles.
