Texture usage in map editing...

Postby Tysech » Sat Jan 05, 2008 8:52 pm

Forgive the 'newbie-ness' of this questnon, but, is there a standard set of textures I should be using for my Nexuiz maps? Perhaps a 'recommended' set of textures? Or am I supposed to use any texture I can find on the 'net, so long as its corresponding license allows?

If your radiant is set up to work properly with Nex, all of the official texture sets from the game should show up in the menu.

Lots of texture sets are already included with Nexuiz. You can either use these, or use a texture set you find on the net if its license allows it. If you want the map to be included with a Nexuiz release, the textures should be licensed in a GPL compatible way. Usually, they aren't but CC or noncommercial licenses are used instead. However, as GPL makes any commercial use of the game not worth it (according to GPL, everyone who gets the game is allowed to copy it for others), it shouldn't be hard to get the required permission from the authors - given that you can reach them somehow.

For music and models, it may be harder to get the required permissions from their author. In case of music, they often use instrument samples from some copyrighted source that doesn't allow that kind of licensing, plus the source code requirement may apply to music in the form that some notation for it has to be supplied. Plus, music and models are something more complex than a texture pack IMHO, and their authors seem to be much more reluctant to free licensing.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.
