[MAP] The Triangles

Postby RockyBalboa123 » Sat Jan 12, 2008 10:37 am

Here it goes... My first attempt at mapping. Please tell me what you think or vote at the polls. Honest feedback would be much appreciated. Its still a little buggy as far as the MAPCFG (getting the name to display etc...) but the map itself is fine (i think :? ) anyway, please, download it and have a look.

Its a fairly small indoor map, designed for CTF only thus far. No real point, just meant to be an interesting map for a fast paced game.

You can download it here: http://rapidshare.com/files/83174929/th ... s.pk3.html

Nice concept there, I like it...
My two cents list is however pretty large, so here it comes:

-WTFOMGLOL, do I see nexuiz 1.5 before my eyes? Those models and icons should be remained from that version. I suggest you to upgrade your nexuiz asap, the latest version is 2.3 :P

-Nice concept, but not for a ctf map. Too open, and it's like eggandbacon, just in a different shape. For a ctf map, you should separate the two flags more.

-More architercute would be really nice. Like I said the map is too opened, and item placement is al wrong too. Why'd I go down the ledge, when all the action is on the large cross in the middle of the map?
One idea cam to my mind: The main cross is ok, but move the flags from the to the two opposite corners of the map, and build a maze to the cross! Not a very difficult one, but add some walls or towers. I'd make some hallways from the flags, that unite in a little arena-style area, where you could defend the flag, build 1-2 guard towers, and connect this area with another simple maze to the main bridge where you could place some important item (like the quad or so). Also, the mazes could have the shield, or the rocketlauncher, or the megahealth.

-add more detail! The basic concept is ok, bt it lacks eye-candy and stuff. Add life to the map with lava, slime, animated shaders and stuff.

I'd say this is not a map yet, but rather a concept. A very good concept tho. Keep up the work, and observe more the stock nexuiz maps and the one Strahleman, tZork, Doc-Python, Clueless Newby, cortez and I made. Don1t worry, you'll imporve in time (just see my last dm map compared to rocket arena :P)

Duly noted. Perhaps, you're right, not the best concept for CTF, will be working on adding DM options and, like you said separating the flags more. I; like you, would love to see more architecture in this map. The problem is I'm not smart enough to make it. I'm going to continue sifting through Bubba's tutorial and then I'll see what I can add to enhance the map. I battled with slime for a bit and then gave up. I'm trying. Its just a pleasure to see you didnt vote for the "quit while you're ahead option" :P

BTW... my nexuiz is 2.1 i think. I don't use that comp for playing because vista is painstakingly slow. So I haven't been bothered to update that PC.

Bah, use your imagination! This is what I've come up in 5 minutes:

Tell us what you couldn't do with that slime pit, I'm pretty sure it's very trivial :)
Bubba's tutorial is fine for the starters, but gives very nasty habits, and obsolete. You should leave that page asap.
Also, why'd I vote on quit mapping? Everybody starts somewhere, noone was born with a mouse in hand! ;)

About Vista... MUHAHAHAHA!!! Delete that crap, upgrade to Windows Xp, or install an ubuntu linux (we can help in that too).
And the reason you should really update to nexuiz 2.3 is that 2.1 is not compatile with 2.3, 2.3 has lot's of new features in the engine too that gives more opportunities in mapping.

Looks like a start.
Listen to C.Brutail: Everyone starts somewhere. Only quit mapping if you don't have fun doing it.
I second that you look at maps that you like. [offtopic]Is this a correct english sentence ?[/offtopic] Try to find out what makes them work for you. You can also look at other games like the UT-series or the quake-series for inspiration.
