I fail to understand how adding another ability to the game will be a waste of time. Even if you don't use it, many skilled players will as it can get them out of a tight situation.

Melees are usually good as a last resort. The closest thing we have to a melee is the nex, which has a slow refire and requires you to have good aim, or a least good timing at close range.

I'm in favor of the secondary on the laser option.

Well my thoughts are that as fast as the game moves I'm not sure it would be very useful, like in Q3 Arena you have The Gauntlet and I don't see anybody using it really.

I could see some melee weapon used in a game mode like Minstagib where everybody just has the melee weapon, however they would have to be smaller maps because the game would take forever to get over with in mid to large size maps..
Maybe just a big square where everybody can see each other and start going at each other just with a melee weapon but I'm not sure it would catch on, I kinda liked the basketball mod for Nex, but that and other mods don't seem to stay popular more than a week or two.

And I fail to understand you when you say ..
The closest thing we have to a melee is the nex

A melee weapon is something that you use your hands with and usually swing, or just your fists and is only good when you are in close striking distance to the other person, the Nex is powerful and used at a great distance, a melee weapon is always the weakest and the one you start out in on most games as the default weapon, and the default weapon with unlimited ammo now is the laser, and if someone gets close enough to you and there was some sort of melee weapon all you have to do is laser jump to get away from them..how often does anybody stand close enough to a opponent long enough to hit them with something with such short range that a melee weapon would have?

Revenant lost the source code, that's where that went. I believe it would have stayed popular.

correct
half credit
wrong

The nex is not just a sniper weapon, you can use it just a close as a shotgun, crylink or mg. The aim/speed is just a different skill you have to master, similar to what is referred to as 'no scoping' in halo or similar games.

Melees aren't always the weakest, look at a game like halo where an assassination will be an instant kill when a sniper to the head may not be. I can't think of any games where it's the default weapon... maybe as a secondary fire?

If you think you can just laser away, you've never been attacked by a ninja.

Often enough that'd I can already think of many situations where I'd find the melee useful.

The gaunlet in q3 is not used very often BUT it makes for some cool frags when used right. I could imagine a melee type weapon in Nexuiz could offer the same coolness factor.
Problem with swords or knifes is that they hardly fit Nexuiz style unless its some kind of light saber. However the really BIG problem is that the models do not have animations for such an attack.
So the idea to use the secondary firemode of the laser for this works around the animation problem, would add a good way to remind players to not get too close (remember the q3 announcer?)

What effect i personally would like is the same as the 'explosion shells' in DP quake, just a bit smaller, around the player that uses the secondary mode:

But i'm not sure if it would work out and look good for everyone including the first person view.

A proper melee weapon would be interesting to see. Though as has been mentioned it currently wouldn't be doable without removing a different weapon due to the lack of CSQC implementations in the engine (this is supposed to change... eventually :))

I think even better than a melee would be an energy shield, ala Halo 3 (the Bubble shield) or UT2k4. It would only last a few seconds (4 seconds max), but would help check the power of the nex. It would only cover the front of the person, and it would take maybe 30 seconds to charge up again.

I'd like to quote divVerent on this one :D
divVerent wrote:I wonder if you run even faster in CS if you hold two, or even three knives. Probably they didn't support that because it would have made the game too fast.

Nevertheless, I liked the Impact Hammer idea in UT99. They downgraded this baby a lot in UT2k3+2k4, but in the original game it could become really devastating, being in the right hands.
And I just loved the charging sound

EDIT: I think, some crazy pros could easily exploit an Impact Hammer for some laserjumped mid-air melee frags... Actually Nexuiz air control is being helpful in this case, so probably it's not a good idea. Anyway, these air duels would look awesome. :P

to be honest, i didn't think a melee weapon would fit, but now that i think of it there are often situations where a fast melee weapon would come in handy (on EvilSpace, for example). the shotgun is a bit too clumsy, imho. "lasering away" is avoiding the game, which is a bit stupid. may cost you a frag or your life. the best for close combat is the Rocket Launcher, if you have enough health. :P

maybe something like a short-ranged Crylink with a spread of 180° (or more).

There must be some advantage to compensate for the implicit disadvantage of limited range.
In jedi knight the melee weapon (light saber) was arguably the best weapon in the game because it had high damage and reflected most projectiles once you weren't attacking. A well implemented mechanic made the melee weapon preferable in another FPS with superjumps and superspeed.
In counterstrike the knife gives extra speed (i think), in UT99 the impact hammer, if charged, had infinite damage.
Don't just say that nexuiz is too fast for melee weapons.

I recommend a right click lock-on for a melee weapon, it will make close combat less disorienting for the attacker and actually usable. With properly balanced damage and refire rate, I'm pretty sure this small change will result in victims desperately laserjumping away for their lives.
