Well, it really depends. The usefullness of a melee weapon is of course limited, but there are some situations where it is a good choice. Best example from Q3 .. you hold the rocketlaunche, took Quad and one enemy is next to you. Now its better to use the gauntlet instead blasting yourself. Same with strength in nexuiz.

In nexuiz you use the the shotgun or the MG

If the shotgun is a melee weapon, the primary fire sucks ass for this purpose...
Secondary fire maybe. Anyway it's no perfect solution. A melee weapon actually could add a tactical aspect to the game imho.

*bump?*

I thought it looked like a walnut. I never actually played UT99, so I don't know what the original I.H. looked like, and looking back at that model, it almost looks like the gauntlet...

But I know it's a bad model. I was trying to make a sub-500 poly model, seeing that the laser was around 800. Obviously, if brought up to the LOD of most weapons, it could look much less... walnutty.

I thought I'd put this up here too. I still have the original lathe template, so I could change the LOD from 4 steps around, to 32 steps around. It's a bit archaic for Nexuiz, but here's a render. (I need to add a leaf-sight)

BTW, the walnut had a texture, did it come in the package?

This model looks like a bazooka from BF1942 imho.
I still think that a little revamping of your original Impact Hammer should work.

The few glimpses of the UT99 one led me to believe it had a domed shape. Hmmm...
The RL is modeled after the Soldier's in TF2, which was modeled after the rpg-6/7, which has been used by infantries for a long time, so that explains that. Anyway:
I haven't gotten a chance to come back to working on game-models lately, I had to make an emo-robot still life (don't ask).
Maybe if I bring up the sides of the shell to more of a dual-cylinder shape, it would look more like the first Impact Hammer. But still, I am REALLY bad at texturing. I need to use some tuts. Any suggestions on texture tutorials for games?

I think we can all agree that the name "laser" makes no sense, and the primary use of the weapon is as a movement tool based on explosive force. I present to you (in under 300 polys, the Force Cannon:

apologies for huge, black images, texturing isn't going well with PS:E 2.0...

I think it's some kind of matter-focuser, the parabola reflects pure energy into the concentrator in the center of the cross-beams, and it projects a hyper-dense, speeding chunk of matter. That means the laser should shoot something more electric-looking, so I need to know where the texture for the laser-missile is. Anyone know?

Kinda reminds me of a sattelite dish in first person view. :P
Nevertheless your explanation makes more sense than a laser-thing, that makes you bounce around the map.
On the other hand... Does everything really has to make sense? :)

I just cant stand that it's called the "laser" it doesn't have to make sense per say, it should just have to have the possibility of suiting the purpose of the weapon. I say a "Force Cannon" fits better than a "laser" as the title of a pushing weapon, and a "Force Cannon" would probably look different than a "laser", even in the nonsensical Nexuizian universe.
