Curve alignment problem

Postby YourOwnDumbSelf » Wed May 03, 2006 10:52 am

I'll let the pictures do most of the explaining.

Here's a picture of curvepatches in the radiant. Here they are perfectly aligned.

And here you can see the same curvepatches in the game with these gaps you don't see in the editor.

Can anybody tell me why there are such gaps there, and how to fix it?
I tried intersecting the patches just a little, and the map runs fine, but is it still bad to do so?

To put it short.. this was an issue with many maps before 1.5 too :) They looked good in the editor, but had gaps in the game.. maybe someone can explain who actually know why ;)

Very strange, never had a problem before. Maybe becouse patches in radiant look more blocky, then ingame. So maybe the engine smoothes them out so much, these gaps occure, but not sure about this :?:

I have this problem as well in some maps and i don't know how to solve it. I believe it's an engine bug as the maps look perfect in quake3.

Ok. I guess the only solutions is to make it a bit different then. Thanks for help!

It looks more like an engine FEATURE: it does not use a fixed number of subdivisions, but tries to accomodate for a given error tolerance in finding the number of subdivisions. See the r_subdivisions* cvars.

That means less polygons are wasted, but also means that you can't align patches together.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

It's an issue with the patch angular limit (I'm at work now so i'll have to check later if that's what it's really called).
Radiant's default matches Q3 perfectly: 15 degrees, (i think) but i have noticed that nexuiz is more like 30 degrees.
Search the preferences you'll know it when you see it. What I usually do is redistribute the patch to a higher number of rows or columns.
