[Map][DM][Beta] Treasure Island Beta 4

Postby sev » Wed Jun 18, 2008 10:47 am

I thought I will never be able to finish it, but here it is; Treasure Island Version Beta 4.
I have been working on it a lot since beta 3, and this is basically the finished version.

The main changes:
- I replaced the water texture with a water shader and removed the trigger_hurt from the water.
- I replaced the rock brushes with .ase models
- I completely redesigned the basement
- I removed most of the clips that have not been obvious
- I put in sharks and seagulls (but was not able to make the sharks kill you when touched...)
- I completely reorganised the hints
- I rebuild/changed a lot of the map in general, not everything is obvious though.
- I created sound files, even a soundtrack :)
- I was able to get rid of the errors (flipped triangle, invalid brushes)

The file:

UPDATE: Get the latest version here

Details:
Map Title: Treasure Island
BSP Name: treasureisland.bsp
Version: Beta4
Release Date: June 2008

PLEASE NOTE: This version is intended for testing purposes.

I will polish it up, there are still some alignments and texturing issues (models), and upload the finished version in 1 to 2 weeks. Until then let me know of any problems or suggestions (changes in the weapon and power-up placement for example).

And lastly a question: Under what terms are the textures provided with Nexuiz (in the data2008xxxx.pk3 file) licensed?
I assume GPL but want to make sure. I used the textures/water/water0.tga to create a modified version optimised for Treasure Island.

It looks absolutly great. And feels great! I wish I was there irl :P
I have not played it with others yet. But I suspect that gameplay isn't great. It's to open.

You have lots of potential. Make moar maps!

Anwser to your last question:
All textures (and everything else) in Nexuiz is GPL.

I can see the water, everything is fine. If you were to work on this more, I would suggest:

1. Use q3map2 to scale everything about 1.5x
2. Make the bumpmap on those rocks a bit lower- they are like spikes!
3. Use an animated model for the shark/seagulls
4. There are some tricks you can do to meld the horizon into the water.

Otherwise, looks awesome! I love your sense of style (not only do you have one, but you are skilled at making it a reality- unlike many mappers). Hope you make more!

PS- my favorite part is the underground tunnel with those portholes :D Great atmospheric touch.

@ Fisume!: Could you be a bit more specific about not seeing the water? Do you not see the water at all, or is there a placeholder, or do you not see the reflections? There are 2 different water shaders (sea and basement), does the problem occur with both? Maybe you could post a screenshot of the problem? Thanks in advance.

I haven't this problem Fisume, I suppose you have a pk3 in your data directory conflicting with the map.

Sev, this version is a nice improvement, great visual work so far. :)
Now you should absolutely focus on the gameplay for the final version : even if the map is open, there isn't enough space to move around. Nexuiz playermodels are quite large, around 1,5 larger than the q3 ones. Like Torus said, scaling the map with q3map2 should do the trick.

Many people have been playing on this map on my DM server to test it out. So far, everyone loves it. But many people have commented that the roofs should be accessible :-)
