I do not know for sure, but it is quite unlikely that you can use a video as background, at least not without changes to the code. (I tried an animated gif, but it does not work Fisume)
A very interesting alternative that I remember from the time when I was testing all different kinds of FPS games was where you start in a "menu-map" (Sauerbraten?). This could be a show-off, demonstrating what the game is capable of
. Pressing ESC opens the menu in front of you, and you aim and "shoot" the options available.

Really nice menu theme

I like the background as it is, but I think some demo playing there (with some image filters so it would look red and mean) would also do (it was the way they did it back in the Doom, Duke Nukem and Blood days, so...). The bad part is that it would take some time to load and also eat up resources, not sure everyone would like it.

Nice skin. Would you be okay with including it in the next Nexuiz release (not sure if as default, but maybe)?
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again
You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Of course you can include it in the next Nexuiz release, that would be great
