I actually tried to stay away from unreal tournament style. Don't want to copy and think Nexuiz should have it's own style. And those samurai flags are not good in a game more than just decorations.

Hmm, from what I can tell, the UT flags aren't exactly the same thing. They are attached only at the top?

Anyway, what about futuristic version of a sashimono? Instead of the frame of the flag forming an upside down L, you could have it curve like a blade or something. I guess I just like the idea of the flag being partially "framed". It looks a bit more rugged. I could imagine it would also simplify the animation of it since the flag would move flap around less (in theory) if it's framed.

Well, then, why don't someone draw some concepts, then I can model it. And having a poll would be good at the end, also to let the devs in to see what they think.

This is my idea of a "traditional" flag.
I'd like it to be huge, especially when being carried, so that the carrier is visible nearly as good as with the current ring... thing... Maybe the carrier could leave a colored trail or something.
And there's actually gotta be some more of this technological detail stuff on the staff. But I'm too lazy atm. :P You could add some shiny LEDs here and there, so that it looks a little more like the Nexgun.

I like sev's idea, for imo it's more original than the usual flag stuff. I'm gonna upload a Harry-version in a few minutes.
I don't like Quake flags btw.

I was thinking of that portal in Hellboy at the beginning of the first movie. That ceremony with Nazis and Rasputin and stuff. Dunno the name of this device though.
I hope it's clear, that the two rings are spinning in every imaginable direction :P with a metallic reflective Nexuiz-Logo at the center of this construction, spinning only on X-Axis.
It should also have sev's blue/red glow inside of the spinning rings, but I'm still too lazy to add it now. :D
Again, the staff has some Nexgun-esque LEDs on it. It needs some tweaking though. A little more of those useless details.
I didn't think about carrying this thing yet. Maybe these spinning rings would apply on the carrier like the current blue/red rings. This would make him veeery visible ;)

And don't mind the broken wires and the sparks. I just needed more detail. :P

I could draw a "clear" version and add some color to make details more visible. For example I had in mind, that while the upper part has to be tidy and shiny, the staff has to look dirty, used and rusty, because it's made of cheaper material or something...

Anyway feedback first.

Keep in mind that you would probably want the flag below 1000 poly (or 1000 at most). Of course lots of detail come with texture, that's why I haven't put in lots of work in my models for that.
But I think we still need a flag, hence the 'Capture the Flag'. How the flag looks like doesn't matter, but flag nonetheless. I do like stuff out of the ordinary (ordinary would be unreal, quake etc. don't copy their stuff, invent something new is my opinion, Harry and Sev already thinks like that)

PS. I was also thinking of LEDs and stuff on the stands that I made, those were to be made of metal, buttons, LEDs, Chinese minks etc.

I really like [GF]HarryButt's flag. I agree with it being large and I would love to see a smoke trail from both first and third person perspective. Bonus, it will help new players know when they are holding the flag :)

i like our flags. they remind me of gears.

other than that i would imagine something more futuristic and technical than a "cloth on a stick".

I love this one! And the spinning rings applying to the carrier would make it perfect.

Some technical stuff (including a button to turn this thing off, not really of course, but for the "logic"): great!
But LED's in the staff? That reminds me of someone who thinks he is a case modder because he put a fan with LED's into his Computer. :lol:

You could make a lot of stuff with textures, for example the rings themselves actually don't have to be 3D models and most of the detail stuff could also be done with some nice textures.
And yeah, the mode is called Capture the Flag, but imo pretty much every kind of flag was used in other games before. So if you want an original idea for Nexuiz, you might want to try out something out of the box.
The game name should be left the same to not confuse the players. But what the "flag" looks like is not really important to have fun playing it, right?
Leave the name and play the game. :P

In fact I was thinking of a "case modded" lightsaber :P It just has to look a little more nexuizish.

Another pic to demonstrate how these cogwheel-rings would apply on the flag carrier.
To avoid clipping weirdness on the ground (bad), you could make them "holographic", as in sev's first idea, so that they have a little transparency or glowing and just don't look solid.
I added a color trail, just to check how it would look like. Now the player is at maximum visibility ;)

When picked up, this flag would be carried on-hand meaning you cant use *any* weapon while carying. it could act as a meeleweapon tho, perhaps evena a very powerfull one.

wrt to poly count: I dont this this is very sensetive. there are at most two flags on screen at any time, so having them be equal or more to playermodels should be fine (~3000+)
