detecting multi-fold meshes (for smd export)

Postby zuriastrad » Sun Aug 10, 2008 7:39 am

sometimes when you try and export a model to smd (for zym or dpm creation), you get this error message...
Image
...which is caused by there being an edge with more than two faces conected to it. these can be very hard to find by eye, but i've been told of an easy way of doing it.

1. select your mesh.
2. go into edit mode.
3. chose either vertex or edge mode.
4. deselect all vertices/edges.
5. select --> non-manifold.

the offending part will now be highlighted. :)

i wonder if this could be incorporated into the smd export script? when this error was detected by the script it could automatically do the above steps and display a more informative error message saying something like...

"this script cannot proceed because there are edges with more than two faces attached. these have been highlighted for you."

just a clarifier. a manifold mesh is one that is "watertight", if you have a mesh that has a hole in it then selecting non-manifold will highlight the edges of holes as well as showing edges with more than two faces. so this function is an improvement on searching by eye, but not perfect.
