sev's flag model

Postby zuriastrad » Sat Aug 23, 2008 4:19 pm

i quite liked sev's flag model and fancied having a go at making it. i made a rough version of it and animated the two spinning things. they worked ok in blender, but not in nexuiz. the smd export script seems to have ballixed things up.

since i now have a working copy of gtkradiant i decided to demonstrate the model by sticking it in a little map. download the pk3 below into base and type map flag-0001 in the console.

That looks pretty nice, really. The texturing could use some work but the geometry looks pretty good. I could definitely see this in Nex with a bit of touch up.

I like it. Is there a way to replace the flag image in the regular ctf mode so that we could see how it looks in play?

Blender now has very good cloth simulations so i have already made a flag blow in breeze but how do i export the animation for nex? There must be a better way than boneing every quad in the cloth. Maybe a md2?

i don't know that the flag on this needs to be animated. it's stretched pretty tight and secured at all 4 corners.

i'm not going to continue working on this model, so if anyone else wants to play around with it, you can download the model here.

That flag model definitely needs more work. Not only textures but also the modeling process. The stick is flat and boring. I also don't like the 'wood' feel in the texture, a silver bar should be much better, much like in the concept.

But you could have added some lights in that map so we could see the flag :P It's always helpful to see things.
Blender, by the way, doesn't have a good .smd export plugin from what I've heard.

The current models are 1 color spinning disc things.

Can someone just help this get complete so we can replace those ugly dated things?

There's no official election of a flag model so there really can't be any modeling till then. Until someone comes and holds an election/vote for the current concepts and/or someone adds more concepts, not much can be done. I mean, I could easily model out any concept we have so far, but I'm not gonna waste my time on modeling out one flag concept, then it gets rejected, model out another concept and that gets rejected. Then I'd model out the concept that seems have the most votes but then some people throw in suggestions and I'll have to redo the model.

So throw up all the concepts so far and vote. If you want to give it more time for concepts to come in just set a deadline for that and then start the vote process.

As for me, I wouldn't mind more flags in Nexuiz. Like it was done in ut2k3-4 . So mappers could decide the look of the flag that fits to their map. The drawback is, that it'd need changes in the code and add a new key to the existing flag entity in the editor.
