1. What can import/export MDLs?
2. What do you use to edit MDLs?

Well, Blender (http://www.blender3d.org) can export to md2 (bleh) and md3( :D ) The md3 export is through a script which I have sitting around here somewhere... Anyhow, if you can get your hands on 3dsmax or maya you might be able to get zym support going. You have to go through Half Life SMDs to get the zym format though.

The mdl and md2 formats are so old you shouldn't use them. MDL is integer based which makes it blocky and md2 smells bad

So you can't model for Nexuiz with free software?

Blender is open source.

Plus it has a large community to help you out.

1. I wasn't asking if it was open source.
2. Blender can't import MDLs or ZYMs.

There is no 3D modeller that can import ZYM. You gotta search for a HalfLife SMD importer/exporter and compile the ZYM model using LordHavoc's zmodel compiler.

Unfortunately this seems to be the only working SMD exporter atm (at least i haven't found more than that whithin 5 minutes) and it's still in alpha stage and doesn't support animations.

Blender can get models into Nexuiz in md3 format, just not zym.

AFAIK ZYm cannot be exported or read directly by any 3D package

Ah, I thought since it was for HL it'd be nonfree.

But still, where are the .BLENDs or whatever the modlers use to edit?

Vermeulen released all player/wepon models/animations some time ago. They are all in 3DS/SMD format iirc. You can get them here:
