Sure, they are GPL then since the author can decide about licensing. Anyone is free to take the textures and use them in their projects as long as their project also is released under the GPL. So even if someone made money off them, someone else is allowed to take the textures (as well as derivative work of them) and distribute them for no charge.

Hmm... Maybe he didn't bother updating his site. :P

Where is the license from the author stating the textures are GPL with the accompanying GPL license.

There isn't one.

There is a third party statement.

Again, I'm not trying to nitpick but looking at the texture author's site gives a very opposite impression of permissible use and the only thing included in Nexuiz is a "good news person X says author Y agreed to allow Nexuiz to use the textures under the GPL *if*"

This may be true or not true.

I am just saying that if this is, in fact, the case then a license from the author should be referenced.

Is there an official statement from the author?

I just think it would be weird for that texture set author to have effectively re-licensed his whole texture collection knowingly.

This is kind of a mess. Once you've released something under one license, it's just about impossible to re-release it under another.

There would be nothing stopping a person from using them out of Nexuiz, and defying the GPL and using the CC because you could never prove where and when that person obtained said textures. The same issue exists with the Evillair textures, which are listed as CC on his site, but are GPL in Nexuiz.

In both cases the author has given permission for their textures to be released under the terms of the GPL, and as such they are dual-licensed. Users can choose which license to use.

This isn't a person x told person y that they may have been released under GPL. It clearly states who gave the permission, and it is the author. How is this 'person x told person y'?

Fair enough, sir. Again, I wasn't looking to nitpick.

Based on the replies -- especially the Irritant one, this isn't a gray area and case closed.

When I was playing some of the new Nexuiz maps I thought the addition of Egyptian looking textures was great and then I recognized them and hadn't recalled them being GPL.

It's nice, as it opens up use in older maps that were designed with it. On the other hand, the Egypt textureset looks pretty dated at this point.
