Yeah, one creates a skeleton (bones, joints whatever you want to call it), then you set up a control system, a rig. That rig is not necessary, it's only there to make the animation process easier and faster. The most important thing is to have that skeleton and it's animation.

Very nice work Morphed! The texture is great, very reminiscent of Kenneth Scott's Q3 work :D (KS is my hero).

As far as animations, etc, I would hope that someone would just take the time and do original ones. I also hope that Nexuiz doesn't get to the point of being overly strict about what programs, etc are used to actually create and animate things. That's a bit over the top IMO, and it would be a shame to see the game veer down that path, which IMO would greatly hinder the chances of new art coming into the game.

That player model is easily the best that would be in the game, and yet there seems to be a number of resistances to actually working to get it into the official game.

Nexuiz is a wonderful game, but like all of the free FPS shooters, there is always room for improvement, and the best place to start is the player models. No amount of slick engine effects, or fancy menus would improve the game as much as having new player models of this quality.

JMHO of course.

It's not Nexuiz that's being strict in which application to use, it's the applications that are strict of how you use them, in a way. You can use any modeling/animation program you want as long as they have the support to export into the necessary extensions that Nexuiz uses.

I do also share the opinion that this is a great model.

The issue that is meeting resistance is that the animations are derived from non-free data that has an incompatible license. This is from my point of view the sole problem and absolutely doesn't mean that Morphed didn't do a great job. A version with free animations would be very very acceptable (albeit the animations wouldn't be as nice).

Oh, yeah, I understood that, I was just saying I hope that it never goes down that extreme restrictive path in the future :)

It already is very restrictive, because the one widespread open source application Blender can't be used to make player models.

However, this has a very simple reason: when the tools to make Nexuiz models were made, Blender was anything but popular (or did it even exist at the time before Nexuiz 1.0?).

However, exactly this issue is being worked on at the moment, and there SHOULD be now a working export script for Blender. But nobody has yet made a player model with it.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

However if it is a 'non-commercial' application, such as the free educational version of 3D Studio Max (if such exist) then none of that would matter anyway as anything created there would go under that license.

WWWWWWRONG!!!!
As per US case law the artist owns that which he creates in the program and can do with it as he likes. If he has violated the license agreement between the company who owns the application or not has no bearing on third parties or who or how the artist decides to use or donate his work.

PLEASE stop spreading the "all your rights are belong to owner of program" myth. PLEASE learn a thing or two about IP law before giving "advice".

YES! FINALLY A NEW MODEL!!1

Good work Morphed!

On the topic of animations, I guess this is all the more reason why Nexuiz needs animators as re-rigging to use the current animations is only a pseudo-solution until the different playermodels have their own animations.

What we need is for all modeles to use the same bones so you only have to do animations once.

Wow... Great work. This one is right next to ArmoredCarni in my favorite playermodels list.
