New Mutator/Gamemode Idea: Freefall Match

Postby Agelith » Sun Nov 16, 2008 8:13 pm

Hello everyone!

A few weeks ago I started experimenting with a new mutator concept, based on the idea of playing in free fall. I thought that a gravityless enviroment will create new grounds for laserjumping, using the hook, and duelling, and will allow the existence of very exotic maps to play on. To try it out, I've set sv_gravity to 0.5, and I've chosen Evilspace. After a couple of tests, I found the gameplay fun enough, and started making a special map for further testing.
My experiment showed some interesting results:

- The bots are working well, they're moving even if there aren't any waypoints present
- Jumping is buggy, and jump pads are completely broken
- Weapons placed floating in the air sometimes appear only on the ground randomly
- Animation issues with playermodels

Besides these technical difficulties, I find the concept great for duels, because it takes more skill, and means a greater challenge, to fight and move in 3D. And I've never seen done this in any other FPS.

I'll post a video on Youtube showing my map and the gameplay. It's very far from being complete though.

Greetings,

There was the Descent-series and later Forsaken.
But as i loved both i'm looking forward to your experiment.

Terminal Velocity was also one of them, very fun.
I have Forsaken original, or at least had, I cannot find it :(
Loved that game.

Yeah, I played Descent a lot when I was younger, that's a really cool game.8)
Uploaded a video that shows the map and gameplay:

Map is in an early stage, but the basic layout is done. I'm currently messing around with variables, to make movement faster.

I sure would love to play that kind of mod! Did you manage to implement all those movement possibilities yet? Can you estimate whether it will be possible to directly continue mouse aiming beyond that spot right under/above you (or is it already)? Then you would also need tilt controls... Wow I am really curious and looking forward to this mod! Great idea!

As I loved the Descent series very much and some others here seemed to have liked it too, here is a link that might be interesting (its a Doom3 Mod, but anyway): www.chmodoplusr.com/IntoCerberon/ (check out the gallery)

But this is off topic SCNR!

Well you could make a map thats in the shape of an 'X' effectively allowing players to 'skii' down the sides, perhaps with ramps for extra fun.

Say that DOES sound like fun....

EDIT: Well I tried it, made a very quick map with a single ramp. Probably better to do with maybe just one BIG slope and all the players starting in one location having to race each other down to get flags, sort of like the other map. The advantage of the X of course, is mid air collisions
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

Funny idea, I like it :)

And btw with the trigger_impulse you can define gravity zones aswell! :)

Really? It will make things much easier. :D
I'm not sure that view limitations can be changed, but if they are, there are endless possibilities.
Currently vertical movement is restricted to the laser and hook. The X shaped map is interesting, I'll try to make one when my first one is completed.
